Deck ramp dos and don’ts.

Hey,

Want to build a ramp from a deck.

Deck will be 3-4’ higher than the landing and the ramp will be most likely straight, at least 3’ wide and the decking will be some sort of composite.

Seems all straight forward but I am sure there are some details and tricks that makes it easier or gives it a nice touch.

X2 on this. Even if you have no handicapped people in your circle of friends. Build to ADA specs and you will have no future problems. Usually not to hard to meet the specs. A friend in town had to redo a sidewalk for less than an inch to steep on the slope and the inspector would not pass it. This was on a sidewalk from the drive to the front door.

1 in 12 pitch for handicap access. So for a deck 4 feet above grade, you will need 48 running feet of ramp. Add in minimum of 5 feet landings if you change direction. It gets tough meeting the standard sometimes.

Very good point about ADA specs which I did not think off.
While I had more elderly, not so far away myself, in mind doing it to disabled specs is a great idea.
