Anyone good with envisioning a simple plan for me? I want to make my walkout patio area more usable and Keep cost at a minimum. I'd like to bring some stairs off the deck down to the walkout. Future plan is a hot tub down there. I need a small retaining wall on the hill side of the walkout. Keeps washing dirt down to the patio. So i need some ideas on how to tie the stairs into the patio and make it larger. Do I just use pavers? Obviously I need to re level the area. Nothing huge. Just usable patio. Hot tub in he sort area next to window? Here's some pics. d120928366043f25064ee819ba8893b8.jpgaa00390c85312e2ebccd362a0ad550e8.jpg8597d2b4f0d960b909f8e6adb19476ee.jpg097d61fe1afd239693356ee29382dbc2.jpg

Pavers are the cheaper solution. I would either pour concrete or stain existing to match pavers you will use. For a tie in I would come off the deck on the yard side with a landing, turn right towards patio with half the stairs to a larger landing the size of a small deck, then the rest of the stairs. One big staircase imo lacks any interest. Still going to cost a grand or two I would wager. I replaced a pt six stair run and it was 300 bucks not including and railing.

you are going to hate me.....

But, if it was me.....I'd extend that deck all the way over to the patio....

Then right in the middle of the deck....a spiral staircase

First, find out what building code (if any) you are required to follow. I built my deck to the 2012 rules- quite an eye-opener. For starters, your railing on the existing deck is way under-built. I'd check to make sure the ledger is attached to the house properly, too. A lot of decks collapse from poor ledger attachment. Once the deck is safe, proceed to adding stairs. If you don't have to deal with inspections, then have at it. I still recommend following established codes, though.

I have a very similar set up. Same walkout, slope and current deck size. I plan to extend the deck all the way over the walkout, extend it a bit from the house, and have a dry ceiling/drainage/gutters to have all-weather use of the underdeck using pavers for a surface there. My plan is to only have steps on the uphill side, away from the walkout. This would be only three steps. The entire underdeck area will be leveled with a retaining wall on the uphill side.

I really like ddawgs spiral staircase suggestion. The wheels are turning now....

If money was not an option, I'd build the deck all the way over the current patio and install french doors on the master which is the windows directly above the patio. I really do like the spiral stair case idea. I have thought about re doing the current railings. My problem is I can never make up my mind on design. Wish I could just pay someone to make it happen.

Don't ask.
I wouldn't want a deck over that window or stairs in front of it. I'd probably bring a few stairs off the deck along the wall and to a landing and continue the stairs towards the yard.
Pour a larger patio for the hot tub and entertaining area.

Go to the local big box home improvement store.
Find the book rack.
There will be tons of ideas.
Money will be the deciding factor.

Agree..on not extending the deck. I'd run any stairs parallel to the deck starting from the far end. Starting point would depend on the rise and run. I'd want the bottom of the stairs to end where the deck ends. JMO.
