Decorating the Garage Door Structure

Is it just me or does anyone else feel weird about these immaculate monuments erected to the gods Tinkerdom, Hotrod, Mave (Man-cave), and Solace which contain all matter of epoxy, polished diamond plate, cabinets by Norm Abram, checkerboard paint schemes, neon, etc., and yet we turn around and look up only to get the smackdown from the galvanized steel garage door roller track, support bracing on the ceiling, and for some the greasy opener and chain. For me, my garage door is the insulated version so the inside of the door is flat and better looking than the non-insulated version. But even the hinges look unappealing. I hate it! Anyone come up with some more aesthetically pleasing solution without degrading the functional requirements of said system?

Unless I'm short-sighted here, I believe the alternatives are the following:

1) change the color of the existing structure (which is not possible along any lubricated/sliding surface such as the inside of the roller track but would be ok to paint the static support bracing),

2) change the material of the existing structure (again probably only appropriate for the support braces as long as they met the same structural requirements), and/or

3) add to the existing structure with additional monuments.

Curious what others are thinking or have done.

I have to agree with the proverbial albatross structure. Then again, it is a structural/utilitarian feature of most garages.

Things I have thought of for a dress up:

Pwoercoating of the rollers, hinges, and tracks.

Duplicating the swiss cheese bracketry in solid steel angle, and coating it to match.

I'd powdercoat the hinges, rollers,etc... and paint the rail. As far as the opener not much you can do except replace it with a jackshaft type.

and here I always liked my garage door opener. now you are making me question that. first painting my cabinets then building a cabinet so I don't have to look at my dirty jacks. now I have to start staring at my garage door opener and wondering how I can make it look better.

man I gotta stop looking at this site it is making me more **** retentive than I was before.

Here is what I did. I had aluminum cut to fit the panel of the door and then it was hand painted by a local artist. I wish I had this idea during the install. I would have powder coated all of the hardware.

I started last week removing the supports and rails for my garage doors and painting them candy apple red. My wife pointed out that I was an idiot who loved waisting all of my time on rediculous projects. Then she saw the results. They look awsome. I also replaced all of the lag screws with brand new zinc plated ones and big washers. I liked it so much that I took off my fuse box cover and painted it to match. I expect to find some other things in there to make match, but I am happy with the way the hardware looks all painted to match.

I also painted my breaker panel to match the accent stripe running along the upper walls of my garage.

My intentions were to do the same with the garage door and trim, but I am just plain burnt out with drywalling, plastering and painting and shifted to working in the garage instead of on the garage.

Like many of you I also try and make the existing look a bit more period or hidden....In Pleasanton, California an insulated garage door is not necessary...I have wooden section door which is being painted white and black checker for the finish flag...the hardware will all be flat black...I like bumper black...tough and easy to use from a rattle can....I also like to place decals on covers and tools...these are plentiful at GoodGuys shows here....http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/images/smilies/thumbup.gif

for my dad's garage we installed an opener that mounts on the side....so no overhang hardware....then is was just do a nice writing job...remote lights operate of the door and a back up power supply helps should the power go out...

picture sot follow....still learning how to down load...give me a wiring job any day instead...http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/images/smilies/beer.gif
