I've been wanting a shop to do my projects. It's for wood, metal or tinkering. I need, a place now that I'm retired. I just get tired of having to pull vehicles out just to work on stuff. I'm very active and wanted a place to work, especially during the winter. 18x20 with scissors trusses. IMG_3408.jpg

Looks like a fun project...Nice work.
I "retired" in July of 2022 and moved to the mountain house full time....Then the projects started. I tell people I was retired, now I'm just tired :)

Agree. I'll be retired for 1 year on June 3rd. It's a wonder how I ever got anything done working 8-5. I remodeled daughter's bathroom and bedroom, our bathroom, and garage rehab. Now I'm tired so, I'll stop. Craig

Day 5. Beginning the truss installation. I built a jib to get the trusses up. I often have to work alone so I usually figure out how to get things done. I moved the jib after a couple trusses were in place. I’m a recreational tree climber and trained arborist. My skills with lifting and lowering came in handy. I used a 4-to-1 and my Kubota to lift the trusses. Craig

Days 9,10,11,12 I got a lot of roofing done. My kids came over and the whole family helped me get the heavy doors installed.

Not exactly sure what day I’m at. Probably about 16/18. The roof is finished and the windows are installed. I installed a new roof on the garage. It was 25 years old. I’ve been installing soffit too.

I’m done for now. Got my final inspection yesterday and passed. I have some other stuff to get done. I need a construction break until I figure out the landscaping, interior finish and layout. The electrical and finishing to follow. Time line and posts were not in sync. Here it is if you’re interested. I didn’t work every day due to rain, material buying, playing and taking a break.
April 11-14 groundbreaking and footer digging mostly by hand.
April 15 forms, vapor barrier and rebar. I paid a guy to help. His estimate was short on stone and I told him but, he’s supposed to be the concrete man.
April 17 concrete pour. I told the guy pouring and finishing he is going to be short. He’s a good guy and dependable but, not so good with math. We almost couldn’t get another load. My estimate was dead on.
May 2-7 Walls, sheathing and house wrap installed.
May 9-15 Trusses, take and soffit framing. This was tough solo work.
May 17-22Roof decking and underlayment. Tough time lifting 5/8 osb. Kubota and 4to1 by myself.
May 23-June 5. Roofing and trimming for days. Windows and door In between. Took a break.
June 6-9 Vinyl siding and trim. Did a lot of cleanup and dump runs.
June 8-14 Finished, so I took break and did some miscellaneous small stuff. Not much going on.
June 15 Final Inspection. Opened double doors, kicked back watching rabbits and blue birds outback. WhooHoo.

Your new roof appears to align perfectly with the existing ( right side in pics ). I know that some builders and remodelers either don’t know how to do that, say it can’t be done, or just avoid building like that. Any tips besides just careful measuring and planning? I noticed you removed the existing siding. Also, is there a door inside between the two?

Correct. Careful planning and measuring multiple times. Work backwards. I want the roof to match. That means I have metal, underlayment, roof deck, truss, plates, studs, sill and then concrete. It can be done with ease if you’re willing to do the math or build the trusses/rafters onsite. I could have made the walls same height and lifted the trusses up to meet the old roof. Make sense? Then I could have had the truss bottom cord dropped or easy to put in ceiling joists. The new trusses were ordered at the same 7/12 and overhang a little wider to be cut for matching…because I didn’t need walls same height. The floor is same height which is a big deal to me. I wanted to be able to roll work cart between buildings. There will be a door between at some point. I just made the new wall match the existing (8.5ft +-). That meant I setup a jig and cut 9ft studs to length plus top plates and sill plate. I didn’t need the ceiling to flow since the shop has scissor trusses. I’m going to install some sort of decorative ceiling. The siding plane doesn’t match on the right Lean-to side because the existing wall was lifted to fix an issue. The siding does match existing on the side you see from the patio and yard. Hope that explains. Craig

I figured I would update the inside information too. The lighting is Lithonia 4ft with 3 lumen and 3 color settings. I put 4 down the center. The model number is CSS L48 ALO3 MVOLT SWW3 80CRI. The walls are 3/8 inches thick T-11 siding on 4 inch pattern. It has water based stain. The ceiling is 6 inch wide pine T&G #2 grade. It also has water based stain. My wife’s suggestion on the 3 colors. I put in a 20 amp dedicated plug and 20 amp plug reel on the ceiling. I also piped compressed air at 90psi. I insulated walls R-13 and ceiling at R-19. It worked well in my garage so, I did the same in the shop. It doesn’t get too frigid here in middle Tennessee. I’ll update when I get my doors to the garage side installed.

First time I’ve seen this build. Looks good.

What’s going to happen inside after the shop is completed?
For a place to work on stuff. My tree climbing gear and practice. Chain saw work. Wood/welding...basically a place where I can do what a retired guy wants to. Craig
