Do you guys put the deep and shallow sockets in the same drawer?
Even the deep sockets is the only reason they are in a 5" deep drawer instead of a 2.5"?

Ok let me ask another way, there is one wide and deep, top drawer,
Do you put most of your sockets and ratchets in there and then save the other shallow drawers for wrenches?

The only drawer deep enough for my 1/2" deep wells is not the most convenient, so I put them in a different drawer. It's just easier to split them up than to move my other sockets to a less convenient drawer.

On my Craftsman box and I'm sure others are the same, the rivets that hold the slides in place can be drilled out, moved to a different spot, and riveted in again. I moves drawers around this way to make the layout a bit more convenient.

Yes I keep all my chrome sockets in the top drawer on the bottom box shallow, deep and mid length. In the same drawer. Metric on the left and sae on the right. Most of them are on Hanson trays. Impacts sockets in a separate drawer. Ratchets in there own drawer. Extensions in there own drawer.

My cart has impact and chrome in the same spot.

Sure, Normally after 9 mos or so you will magically have Mid Length sockets, Unless they are Chinese Sockets, They have strict reproduction laws.

I have SAE in one 2.5" deep drawer (shallow, deep, 1/4, 3/8/ 1/2) 6-pt, 12-pt, impact along with corresponding ratchets, extensions etc. All my metric are in another drawer with their own set of ratchets etc.

Surely the OP has posted some sort of trick question here. It is OCD to the point of real concern about their mental condition if someone is worrying about putting deep and standard sockets in the same drawer.

I see there is a NEW THREAD about Carlyle mid length sockets......... this should be enough to put the OP over the edge.....................

I put all of my 1/4 together, and all of my 3/8 together and all of my 1/2 together, separate boxes, just by chance. The 3/4 set lives a lonely life in the deep bottom drawer of one box. The two larger socket sets and all the pieces such as extensions and ratchets reside in the top (not a drawer) of the boxes. 1/4 stuff in all in one drawer to itself.

Here is the layout of my top drawer. I keep my everyday use items in the top drawer. SAE wrenches go in the shallow drawer just below the top and the metric wrenches the next drawer down.

Deep and regular chrome sockets share the same drawer while deep and regular black impact sockets are stored in a drawer closer to the impact wrenches.

I keep all of my Shallow, Semi-Deep and Deep Sockets in the Same Drawers, they are divided up by Metric and Standard Chrome, and Impact, both Metric and Chrome.

All of my sockets are in one drawer. I only have 6 point sockets at the moment but once I save up and fill this box. Ill buy another box and have the large drawer full of 12 point. Hopefully one day I'll have a third box with impact sockets.

I wanted to see if people put the deep sockets sideways or in a separate drawers, the number of deep sockets I have is smaller compared to shallow, extensions, and adapters. So they would otherwise could be kept in a more shallow drawer. But most I have seen of you guys drawers has the first big drawer storing all the sockets.

I have the same problem, I have a ton of deep sockets but the drawers available in my chest are not deep enough. I used wooden dividers to separate them until i can find some kind of small rack system that keeps only ONE set together so I can lay them on their side to fit in the drawer. Problem with that is, some of my sets are larger than the average socket organizer aka they hold 15 sockets but one set may be 12 and another may be 20 sockets. They are also more than I really want to pay for a socket organizer too...

The Hanson style socket trays offer good way to store the sockets upright in your first wide drawer, but in my older toolbox I still had to sand off a few of the pegs tips for clearance. The Lisle socket holders are a good alternative for a narrow drawer because the sockets lay flat. I also keep a couple of the Mechanics Time Saver blocks of 3/8 deeps to grab as a go-with-me if I have to work away from the toolbox. My 1/4dr's are in the Mech Time Savers blocks also.

My setup is pretty small (old SO stack in my avatar) 3/8 drive stuff is all in the top of the chest, because I use it more often. 1/2 drive is in a drawer in the roller.

I have deep, shallow chrome and impact in one the deep top drawer of my HF box. 1/4 drive and bit sockets are in a narrow drawer . For some reason I have a lot of duplicate 1/4 drive so they eat up a good amount of real estate.

1/4, 3/8, and 1/2" shallow and deep all reside in the top drawer. My 3/4" sockets are in a lower drawer with less used items.

I keep all sockets, ratchets and extensions in the top of my 52" toolbox. It is not enough room for all the impact sockets, so I keep common ones there and less common in remote boxes.

I think the question is about weighing the convenience of having all sockets in one place vs. the more space efficient possibility of putting short sockets in a separate drawer that is no taller than it needs to be. No doubt OCD rears its head on this board from time to time but I don't see it here.

Too many deep and impact sockets in the top drawers-especially the 3/4" drive-could cause the chest or box to get top heavy and fall over when the drawer is opened!

I can't really see that happening unless every other drawer was empty...

I have all my 3/8" and 1/2" sockets and ratchets in the big top drawer of my HF 44" that includes shallow, deep, and all the impact sockets, 1/4 has its own little drawer and the 3/4" and 1" sockets and accessories live in the deep bottom drawer

I don't have a pic of the bottom drawer, but I also have some of the larger 1/2" drive deep impacts in there as well, they don't see a lot of use.

I used to have one drawer each for 1/2, 3/8 and 1/4 drive. Sockets, extensions, ratchets, breaker bars, everything. They were 2" drawers, so deep sockets were on their sides. Then I got bigger sockets for axle nuts which didn't fit in the shallow drawer lying down. Now I have 1 large deep drawer for metric sockets, and a smaller deep drawer for SAE sockets. Ratchets and extensions are in a shallow drawer.

I do similar to this. It drives me nuts to have to open two drawers to get a 9/16" socket with a 3/8" ratchet, and I can't store everything in one drawer. I typically don't have 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" out on the same job anyway. I keep all my 1/2" stuff in the very top under the lid of my HF 44" since I use 1/2" more than anything. I keep 3/8" stuff including deeps sockets on peg organizers in the shallow bottom drawer of the top section (I moved the deep drawer to the bottom section). All my 1/4" stuff fits in the top right hand drawer in the top section. 3/4" stuff lives in a seperate chest since I only use it when doing ring and pinions or front end work. My 3/4" torque wrench is like 4 feet long, so its not going to fit in there anyway. I don't think the case would fit in the full width drawer even diagonally.

In my shop box:
All the 1/2" drive is in one drawer, primarily on Hansen sockets racks.
SAE on one side, Metric on the other.
Twelve point deep wells share the same Hansen rack as the Six point deep wells.
Six point impact deep wells share a rack with the twelve point chrome..
Eight pointers share a rack with the shallow impacts.
Swivel impacts are on a rail.
Adapters, impact and chrome swivels, and short extensions are on another rail.
Ratchets, speed wrenches, breaker bars, tee handles, an offset drive, torque multiplier, impact wrenches, air ratchet, clicker torque wrench and extensions fill the remainder of one drawer.

The drawer that holds the 3/8" drive is arranged in a similar manner, and also includes some specialty sockets , and all the flare nut and crow foot sockets; which are on rails.

The 1/4" drawer is smaller, with no impacts, but arranged similar.

The 3/4" and 1" drives got booted out of the 56"General because the drawers would sag under their weight; and scrape the drawer beneath.... These were returned to their set boxes, which are stored in the open front drawers of a 36"X!8"X65" commercial grade file cabinet.. The drawers slide out and the lid to the set box is lifted to select a socket... Two set boxes contain 3/4" sets with ratchet, breaker bar, extensions, and twelve point sockets in metric and standard.. The 1" drive has it's own set box and contains only twelve point SAE sockets..
3/4" and 1" drive impact sockets are stored in similar, smaller set boxes in the same cabinet... The 1" impact wrenches get the bottom drawer by themselves.. The 3/4" impact, some axel nut sockets, two 3/4" drive torque wrenches, a torque multiplier, and two sets in a carry tray share the top two compartments.... There are also large pipe wrenches and metric and SAE combination wrenches in that poor cabinet....

As far as the total weight in that file cabinet;;; If I had all that weight in my drawers, I would be sagging also... So I can't think too lowly of that 56" General..

My vehicle box is arranged similar to the shop box for 1/4" and 3/8"drives, with a set box used for 1/2" drive and larger tools.. A third portable box is used to keep the weight more manageable.

The top of my Road Chest is arranged similar to my shop box, but with 1/2" and 3/8" drive sharing that space... Being this box is heavy to start with, it stays in the van...

A forth set of tools use bench space or are hung above the bench in the tractor shed..

All four groups have metric and SAE sockets in 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" drive, and make use of Hansen socket racks.......

If short of room, ratchets, extensions, and breaker bars will fit between the two rows of sockets on a Hansen rack...I do this in my vehicle box......

Guess to sum it up, I like sockets sorted by drive size, and type,
I like Hansen socket racks, And tool box drawers are ok to fill, but not overfill.., But I do not want to fill my drawers..:lol_hitti

I have been slowly getting away from having 6 point chrome sockets in 1/2 drive having just 12 point chrome and 6 point impacts as it takes up less room. If I am using 1/2 drive I am using the impact anyway.
