Ok I've been looking for something to have as a back up for my sump pump encase the power goes out. My basement sump crock fills up super fast during rain storms, I'd say 5 gallons a minute. My float trips every 5 minutes. Anyways, since I've been a home owner for 6 years I've had to replace the WatchDog and Wayne 12 volt pumps because they fail within a year. They work, but they are cheap and stop working. I have a good cast iron 3/4 horse as my primary which is 3 years old and has been working overtime the past couple days. I have another cast iron 1/2 horse back up just encase the primary fails.

Now I've heard about guys using a deep cycle 12 volt AMG battery, 1000-1500 watt inverter, battery charger/maintainer hooked into a 1/4 horse 5-6 amp draw ( <800 watt) sump pump.

Is this a good set up for a back up sump pump encase the power goes out? Or should I just replace the stupid 12 volt pumps every 8 months?

Thank you in advance!

As part of your solution, make sure your exterior drainage is not adverse and pipe your downspouts and sump discharge as far away as your grade will permit.

properly sized inverter/charger and battery would do well for your possible outages.

You would need to assess costs and risk to see which you are most comfortable.

Ayuh,..... Look into Boat Bilge pumps,.....

They can be found Waayyy better than what's you've been buyin',....
'n they're the same things, only better, 'n available bigger,.....
Find a Bilge pump in the 1000 to 2000 gph range,...
Rule are some of the Best,.....

Yer battery will last longer, ya won't need the inverter, 'n it's losses,......

Unless you have more than a few batteries the pump wont run very long off an inverter. Inverters consume huge amounts of power from the battery and you will need a large inverter to handle the startup current of a motor.

A boat bilge pump would be a much better option as stated above. Then add in a solar charger and spare battery for extended outages and you will be all set.
