I am looking to buy some new deep sockets and want to know which brands of socket are fully and partially broached. So I have done a few searches for this information on the forum and on Google and can't find a full list just bits and pieces. This is what I have so far.

Please add what you know to the list. Also, if any of mine are wrong let me know. I searched some older post so things may have changed. list is for chrome sockets unless otherwise specified.

Also note this thread isn't a discussion about which is better (that depends on your needs). It is simply a list of which companies do it which way.

Fully Broached (Or atleast over 3/4 of total depth)

I could be wrong, but I thought Proto (some?) weren't fully broached and since Mac sockets aren't according to your list, I may be correct. I know 1/2" drive Blackhawk USA are fully broached, but don't think Matco's are. I'm going off memory. Also, SKs deep sockets are comparable to other brands semi deep sockets in terms of length. Designs may have changed over time as well depending if you're buying new or new old stock. Wright, Autocraft and Sunex impact sockets I know are fully broached as well.

I checked the measurements provided on the Proto website and you are correct. They are partially broached, but just a little deeper than the other partially broached sockets.

I also got the SK information from SK's site, but I only checked deep sockets and not extra deep or semi deep. I will be sure to check those too.

Thanks.

I have conflicting information on Blackhawk, and I am guessing it may be a difference between drive types. Can anyone confirm that this is the case?

I was wrong about the Blackhawk USA. My mistake I just checked now that I'm home. There are conflicts in drive size and age though. I have three craftsman 3/8" drive one full broach, one 3/4 broach and one 1/4 of it broached.

1/4" drive - Gearwrench is about 1/4 broached, bluepoint is 1/2 broached.

1/2 drive - Bon-e-con 1/4 broached, new Britain 1/4 broached, oem 3/4 broached, Matco 1/4 broached, Blackhawk USA 1/2 broached (my mistake).

3/4 drive - HF pro impact are 3/4 broached. Mac 3/4 broach

3/8" drive - Easco full broach, kal USA 3/4 broach, gearhead 1/2 broached, Cornwell 1/4 broached, alltrade Taiwan 3/4 broach, js USA 1/2 broach, husky USA 3/4 broach, master mechanic 1/2 broach, and the rest are already listed.

Was about to replace a zerk fitting, and to my surprise, I could not get my SK 1/4" drive deep socket to go over the fitting so I could tighten it. Zerk size has 1/4" hex. All of them were shallow broached to about 0.186. SK number 41908, made in USA. I have some "vintage" SK Wayne that I will check and see how deep they are. What is the point of a deep socket that is not deeper broached? Fortunately, I have a Craftsman 1/4" shallow that is deeper than the SK, and I will be able to complete the job.

I know this is an old thread but I am specifically looking for shallow broach 1/4" drive sockets so this is relevant to me, and I figured I'd update. Was in Harbor Freight last night

Pittsburgh Pro 1/4" drive 6 point - deep broach
Pittsburgh Pro color coded 1/4" drive 6 point - deep broach
Icon - could not see because of packaging
