Default New Door - Amarr Lincoln LI2000 vs LI3000

I am looking to replace my un-insulated garage door with a new insulated door. The contractors initial estimate listed an Amarr Lincoln LI2000 which is a double layer steel and insulation door with a listed R value of 6.64 (about $900). Looking at the brochure, there is also a triple layer option (LI3000) with a R value of 9.05 which I was quoted roughly $200 additional for. Is the additional layer worth the added cost for an increase in insulation value?

In Toronto, I would strongly recommend the additional insulation. In San Diego, not so strongly.

Is the door going to be 3" thick? It will deffinatly hold up better long term but springs will cost more down the road.

No. The double layer doors are really thin, actually. It's an insulation sandwich. I don't know what an LI3000 really is, and I don't care enough to look.

The benefit of a "triple layer" door is that it has steel on both sides (two layers of steel, one layer of insulation) which gives the door extra "structure."

Having steel on both sides of the door is a real plus in a finished garage. That alone is worth extra, before you even get to the added R value.
