defeat "smart charger" battery detection?

I need an old-fashioned always-on battery charger. All the new ones I've seen have Battery Sensing - that is, they won't put out any voltage unless they are connected to a battery. Apparently all current chargers are made with this "feature". What I need it for is running an overhead hoist for working on a
lawn/garden tractor. It worked great, but the charger I was using is no more.
So, does anyone know how to defeat this feature?
Or, does anyone know of a charger that doesn't have it?

Thanks - my aching back seeks a solution.

P>S> yes, I thought of buying a new tractor that won't need fixing. Multi $K - not happening.

How many amps do you need? Some chargers have an engine start which can provide 50A for a few seconds before needing a cool down period.

You probably burned out the old charger since an engine hoist is probably going to pull a lot of current more than a charger is designed to output.

To be honest a battery & tender are always going to be the cheapest solution for a 12V winch/hoist.

What you really need is a DC power supply that can provide that current continuously. As BrandonV says that battery charger isn't meant to do that. I would look at a 110 hoist at harbor freight for your application.

You can trick them by momentarily putting a 9 volt across the output. I had the thought to put a small wall wart inside the case fed off the 120vac and a momentary switch across the output.

Quite a few chargers have a “power supply” mode, that will do what you want. My NOCO 10 has that mode.

Wow - so many different solutions, and all plausible!

I know about the 50A engine start mode - just assumed it would also require battery. That's one (without battery sense) I have on hand - I'd just be really bummed if I made it go kaput because it's the one I use for my electrolysis tank.

More data points. I hooked up a 12V 4Amp battery - like the ones used in alarm systems and suchlike - and the HF charger started right up. Unfortunately, its claimed 50A for engine starting was not enough to lift the garden tractor. I have another, older HF unit without the battery sensor, and it also was not able to lift the tractor on Engine Start mode.
Now I almost wish I'd kept the old charger. But the reason I left it behind is it's so big, and that hasn't changed.
Oh, well, onward in search of the answer.
