The property that my wife and I are buying this June allows for us to build a detached garage of no more than 3 cars. With the way the property sits and where I would like to put the garage, I'd like to go about 2.5 cars wide and 1.5 cars deep.

Has anyone ever had any hassle with doing something like this? What would you consider the dimensions to be if you built such a building?

Our definitions mean nothing. It's the local definition that counts. They could mean "no more than 3 garage doors". Area wise, yours sounds like a 3 car turned 90 degrees.

what you should look into is the regulations of other out buildings. they may limit you to a 3 car garage, but may allow a sizable barn or pole building. or perhaps 2 separate 3 car garages.

Just ask if it is defined by SF or by doors.

I had a fire a few years back which gutted my 2 car which I had planned to build into a 3 car anyway. I left the 2 car walls, added 12 ft to one side and a second floor. It is 22x32 but the 2nd floor was more issue than the size!!

So the wife has a 12x22 separate garage and I have a 20x22 with a huge upstairs.
