What humidity should a garage be when there are cars stored in it?

We got mold starting and bought a dehumidifier and it's was 83% and now we keep it 55-60% but had someone tell me it needs to be at 38%. That seems low!

If it's a wood framed structure measure the moisture content of the wood studs and joists. You should be able to find some data on acceptable moisture levels for wood on the internet.

l understand rust stops forming at 60%. Below 40% and you might get wood shrinkage and cracks in leather. Piano manufacturers recommend 55%, so that's a good number.

38% is a pipe dream with any store bought dehumidifier, considering the average desert has an RH of 45-50%...

just went through this, in the winter it was staying around 40-45%, cold dry winter. then summer hit and was staying around 70-75%. surface rust was popping up on clean metal, and things i was working on. Have a PTAC and keep it on 74F

got a dehumidifier and set it up for 50% left the PTAC as it was 74F after 3 days the humidity stays around 45-55%. and it feels a lot cooler granted the temp is still 74F

I live close to the coast of the Atlantic so moisture is abundant !!

That sounds pretty high...I just checked and the relative humidity in Phoenix right now is 19%. In Qatar it's about the same.

My numbers may be WAY off. I used numbers from memory that were based on what we experienced on an average of what we see in the US...
