Forgive me if this has already been asked. I recently went to delete a post i made on a thread and its no longer an option. Did this feature get moved somewhere or is it gone all together?

I too miss the delete function but I understand that it makes for administrative headaches.

Lately, I have needed to delete a posting. I just go to edit and remove the words and replace with:

I'm a bit slow... is it possible to give an example of one of the administrative headaches?

The only headache I could think of was a deleted post causing issues with the automatic post numbering system of the thread. Not saying this is trivial to the administrators but if that's the only issue a deleted post causes I have a follow-up question.

Best regards,

Scott

Some background on the delete function being disabled, posts #33 to #41.

Just post something way out of line. The moderators will take care of the delete (you may also get deleted)

Quite possible.

Eric,

Well I now know the history...

it's not my house and I don't have to maintain it so I have no say in what the people that DO own and maintain it want to do.

That being said...

The reason I miss the delete option has to do with the way I often post updates in my thread. I tend to be picture-heavy and the limit of 7 uploaded pictures to a single post causes me to often have multi-post updates. To preserve the continuity of my update, I will do some math to determine how many posts I need to accommodate the pictures and then load that many "under construction" posts (30 seconds apart by law) as fast as I can. Sometimes, as math in public is so famous for, I goof up the number of needed posts and load an extra Under Construction post. Without the ability to delete it, I am stuck. It's not the end of the world but it would be convenient to be able to delete that extra post once I realize my error.

The follow-up question was based on the assumption that the real issue for the folks maintaining the site was that if a post was deleted, it goofed up the post count and that needed to be manually fixed. It doesn't sound like that's the case.

The follow-up question would have been to see if it was possible to allow the deleting of only the last post in a thread. The ability to do so would allow me to efficiently fix my occasional overcount.

Not a big deal.

Thanks for all you guys do.

Best regards,

Scott

I'm not sure why you would want to limit yourself to some many pics per post. If you can get all the detail in one post, fine. If it takes 2 posts to do an update, np big deal. If you have plenty of pictures and it takes 7 posts to explain and get all the pics on the forum, why worry about the amount of posts you make ?

Honestly, I prefer people to limit pictures to a lower count in a post. If you have multiple people quoting you and they don't delete the extra pics out of the post, you can have a whole page of the same pictures.

In the end, no big deal. If you screw up your count and need something deleted, just send me a PM. I'll be happy to help you out getting it deleted.

Eric,

Thanks. Should I need to get a post deleted I will be in touch.

Just to clarify (I hope)...

The reason for the "worrying about the number of posts" is to try to maintain continuity in that particular set of posts.

I tend to take a while constructing a single post. If I needed 6 posts to get all the pictures I want to include in that series of posts and I completed each post individually before moving to the next post, another GJ'er might respond to the first post as I'm constructing post 4. Now I've got an interruption to the "story" I was trying to tell by stringing all 6 posts together in a line. Multiple responses from GJ'ers before I finished all the posts would make my goal of a clean "6-part story" worse.

That's what I'm trying to avoid, in the above example, by banging out a half dozen "under construction" posts first and then backfilling with content & pictures. Like I mentioned earlier, sometimes I goof up my count and wind up with an extra "under construction post".

Not a big deal - thanks for your offer to fix things should I stumble.

Best regards,

Scott

Any chance we can have the delete option again? (maybe with a short time window).

Sometimes the heat of the moment results in an inappropriate post. Wouldn't it be better to have the OP "self police" their own posts so the moderator doesn't have to do it for them?

That's going to be a decision for Ryan to make.

Did you see what ssdave did before he said good bye ? That's a prime reason why it the "delete" function went away.

Yes.

Edited them to leave behind,

...

I've got to ask a somewhat dumb question: if a user can edit their post back several years to "...", how is that justification for no delete button? Seems both should be removed/allowed.

Other vbulletin forums I'm on allow deleting and editing for a specific amount of time. Can the time be set to a day for deleting, maybe a week or month for editing?

Nothing is stopping from the user from leaving a "S" in place of their previous content. It's more a deterrent and literally more work to do so that just hit the DELETE button.

I suppose Ryan could set up time limit for editing. I have seen it done on other forums as well. Maybe the switch to Xenforo will bring that change.
