for 1/4 you want nice slim proper stepped shouldering like the GP as makes far more usable over chunky wall and tapered nose .

GP does surface drive in 1/4" which makes the diameter larger and can be annoying because fasteners get stuck in them often.

Just about any impact sockets will work fine. I think the only thing that will really make personal opinion vary is the finish on the sockets, and how the sizes are marked. As far as performance, you’ll never find any bad words about impact sockets.

FWIW impact sockets that have the groove for a retaining pin, especially smaller sizes, are a lot easier to pull off a hog ring impact. If you're just using the sockets on a hex adapter then it won't really matter. Just buy the set that best fits your budget.

I'd get CR-V Taiwan impacts that have a pro design. Why compromise on design when you don't have too. Properly shouldered impact will allow for greater access, large stamped sizing & CR-V so they don't wear out of shape and become sloppy. Plenty of cheap options out there that meet the criteria, this is one area of hand tools where you can buy better quality than many tool trucks at a fraction of cost. Many who start these threads get all the advice then go buy poor designed sockets as they were set on them from the get go & don't get the difference.

No need for them wearout in 6 months, issue is US made been made softer for H&S liability reasons .
I got older sets that last years/decades, don't expect 200buck socket set be wallowed out to point it usability issue in 6months.
I was lucky my mac dealer decent and swapped whole set no drama .
Like cr888 states, These days I buy most of mine crv taiwan japan style as pretty cheap, decent design features and far more durable and when common sizes are too worn simply self warranty with another set .

I wouldn't, had mac impact set and had warranty it in 6months then sold it as wallow badly as so soft .

Did your mac set come in a metal tray? I'm curious to know which set it was. The U.S.made sets come in a metal tray like shown above and will have an R at the end of the part number.

Are we talking the 1/4" hex drive impact tool here or the 1/4" anvil wrench. :headscrat

I have had both styles in the Milwaukee platform and I really do like a snug fit with the socket on the tool, which a spring ball retainer 1/4" hex drive socket adapter provides vs 's 1/4" Milwaukee's 1/4 square drive.

I haven't had much luck with impact sockets fitting snug on the ring anvil. Not that affects performance but just sloppy free spinning. :dunno: I don't know if its just the limited few 1/4 drive impact sockets I use though some chrome finished sockets I have definitely fit better.

Are there bullet shaped tapers to some 1/4" stuff or are they all just full diameter in length or the stepped style?

Find a piece of thin soft foam and tack spray glue it to inner lid .
Sockets are nice design but everyone complains about the ATD case
