Maybe your out of context thread got outta hand.

May shed some light on it -

Edit to add two comments further down the pg.

The question that needs to be asked is "Does the discussion add to the value of the site?"
It's either a yes or no answer.
If the answer is no, then why not delete it? It's just superfluous (and more often than not) divisive claptrap. Who needs it?

If it's political, the thread should not only be deleted, those responsible should be banned from the site.

If it was the topic you choose that caused the deletion, I'm betting you'd have gotten the message, even if that message was simply the ban hammer. They run a nicely tight ship here.

So, a moderator looking to clean up that tomfoolery has a choice. To spend the time and delete or edit offending posts (which may be worthwhile in some cases), or just clean up the mess with one shot. I guess someone decided it wasn't worth the effort.

Well said gentleman.

They're just kinda proactive on the website in keeping volatile threads in check which includes deleting. Not that they were bad threads (not OP's fault). But some of the members can't respond logically and rationally without getting political. So it gets deleted.

Some times you get an explanation, sometimes you don't. If the thread is deleted, more than likely you're not going to get anything.

Whether deleting or locking is going to depend on the Mod who does it and whether they feel it should just go or just be closed and allowed to be read at a later date.

Ridiculous ? That's a point of view but think about this. Some Mods are more active than others for whatever reason, doesn't matter. So (for example and theoretically ) I'm the most active Mod and I catch threads or posts before another Mod does and I start closing threads. I leave an explanation of why, what does that make me look like ? Yeah, an ******* because I'm always closing threads and nobody else is. . . . but it's not because I'm an *******, it's because I'm just more active than anybody else.

Walk in those shoes for awhile and you might understand why you and other members don't always get a reason stuff gets deleted, closed or moderated.

I get it. Sh1t happens. I've never been on a forum where non-spam threads got deleted, usually just lockup. That's obvious because the thread still shows on your usercp, it's just locked. When it just ceases to exist, that's when I start going:wtf: and at the same time wonder if it was the topic that caused the deletion or some tomfoolery downthread by other posters and restarting the thread again would be in order.

"Value of the site" is highly subjective. One could argue that if it's not garage, tool, automotive related then its worthless. But there is camaraderie, fun, and escape from boredom to be had in other topics.

I assure you, word association and the song title thread do not add the kind of "value" to the site that you are speaking about. At the same time, they dont need to be deleted.

There's been time I've cleaned threads up and left it at that, other times, posted a warning to keep it on track or it's gone/locked. However, if it seems it a cycle where members want to push the limits, (it does happen) it'll be gone in a blink of an eye.

If the word association thread was deleted, do you realize how many members would lose a large portion of their post count ? How well do you think that would go over ?

I believe it was deleted in the beginning. Several members politely asked for it back... not necessarily for the count... but because that thread adds to the family feeling of several active members...

Family counts sometimes... it's like the threads that discuss what we are doing that doesn't necessarily have a car or ratchet in it. It's about a comfortable place to talk about our common interests.

For all of us its TOOL centric... some pros, some hobbyists... some in training... Several in advanced years that get a chance to reminisce.

Hey, what happened to the Word Association thread? I enjoyed that thread. It was up just a few hours ago. Now it's gone, like a fart in the wind.

I posted to that topic today. It was zapped by a Mod and I believe it may have been spam attacked. I was looking to moderate a few posts then I could not find it. Not 100% sure but we are looking into it. If we can get it back we will but sadly with so much going on I can not make any promises. :(

I just noticed the word association was gone. On other matters I made it 10 years in GJ.

Meh, we are all human.

One thing I noticed, even with it being hard deleted, didn't affect post counts.
