I picked up a "new" drill press for my garage that needs a little work. Can anyone recommend a source for cheap, but decent motor? The motor on the press is 3/4 HP, but is 3-phase, which won't work for my house. I would like to put a similar HP single phase, 115v motor on.

Also, does any one have any idea as to how the table raising mechanism works? The "rack" for raising the table was bent. I bent it back, but can't really tell how it works. The rack moves rather than the table. The rack has a "u" shaped piece welded to it. Is that "u" supposed to hook on something?

Thanks for the help.

Why replace the motor? Get a variable frequency drive (VFD). It will convert the 120V single phase to 240V 3 phase. But the best part is you also get variable speed out of your motor. I find most drill presses run too fast for bigger drills in metal. With a VFD, you can set the frequency to 30Hz and run the drill half as fast. Very handy.

I was thinking about that, but am no electrical engineer. Could you shoot me a link to any that you recommend?

As mentioned, a VFD is a good way to go for the motor. Just over a hundred bucks from places like Dealers Electric. The rack gear needs to be straitened so that the hook fits around that collar and bearing that you show underneath it. There is a lock on the table that must be released before cranking the table up or down.

You need to get the rack flatter than that, but the U clip on the bottom goes over the collar. EDIT: Yeah what 454 said... (still recovering, I'm not 100% here today...) The Gear rack itself needs to rest on the collar. if the U clip does, you will just bend it. (In process to fix this issue with my Canedy Otto while the rebuild is in process...)

Another vote for the VFD, or another option is to go with a Treadmill motor. I did on my Rockwell, and that will get moved over to the Canedy...

Treadmills can often be had for free, and rarely is the issue a motor...

Do a search on You Tube for "mrpete222 vfd". He installed a small vfd controller on his drill press that has a 3 phase motor. He does a good job of explaining how to hook it up and test it.

Just think, no more shifting belts on pulleys.

Vfd will give you great rpm control. If you want a nema4 enclosure look at Kbac drives.

A buddy of mine added a trailer leveler to his Craftsman drill press, to avoid the pain of manually raising and lowering the work surface. Very handy.
