Hi guys. I just picked up a Delta 15-270 drill press at an auction. The motor won’t spin when first switched on without spinning it by hand. Has a starter box not sure if that’s the problem or if it has just sat for so long. But my main question is on the pulleys. As I look at the parts diagram from Delta it shows a step pulley on the motor and a step pulley on the spindle. Mine has what I think is an original Delta motor with a 2 step pulley, then an idler pulley with 5 steps mounted on a cast iron sliding dovetail, then a 6 step pulley on the spindle. Anyone else have one of these With the idler? The two step motor pulley will only line up with two of the pulley grooves on the idler, either real fast or real slow. I also can’t get the motor to swing close enough to get the belt into another groove. Is it just too short (wrong belt) from motor to idler? I guess my main question is I think I’ll be limited in my speed selection by just running off the small diameter motor pulley. Am I missing something. You need to replace the 2 step pulley on your motor (which is not original) with a four or five step pulley.

The good news is you have the intermediate pulley which gives a wide range of speeds and it appears you have the slow speed spindle pulley which is a good thing if one is drilling large holes in steel.

As mentioned, the motor pulley is not original. The Delta units are not common, but not impossible to find.

If you don't find the Delta, a catalog replacement will work, but will usually require a readjustment of the belt each time speed is changed.

Looks like my 1956 15in Delta drill press (pic before I restored it below) has that same middle pulley dovetail arrangement. For decades I thought my dad had fabricated it, but I've since learned they were commercially available, judging from a half dozen other examples I've seen on the web. Any idea who provided them?

Your motor issue is most likely the capacitor. Should be able to easily source a replacement.

Can you tell me how many steps your motor pulley has?
