Hello,

This was a well built, american made, all iron, beast of a scroll saw. It was made from the 40's into the 70's. I picked one up last month for only $80 and have just got done giving her a good cleaning and am in process of swapping the old bearings out with new ones. I couldn't find that much information on them on the internet so I figured if anyone has any tips or tricks that they would like to share here that would be great! Here's pictures of mine.

I've got two of those waiting for me to give them some attention. If you go over to OWWM.org and search you will find tons of information relating to rebuilds and quite a few real experts on the machines. Also at vintagemachinery.org you can find all types of manuals and wiki information relating to these machines.

get a pot of coffee going - you will have a lot of reading to do :)

I would be using 30 wt NON-detergent oil in the crankcase.
Interestingly enough the manual calls for 10 wt Non-detergent oil. I have a couple of motorcycles and guess what... Motorcycle fork oil comes in 10wt and is non detergent and I've got an extra quart laying around! Was kinda stoked when I figured that out.

what all are you having to replace?
I'm replacing both bearings. The ones in there were the original Timkin roller bearings. I cleaned up and regressed the air pump, that was pretty gross, replacing the oil with 10wt motorcycle fork oil (it's non detergent) and I might remake a couple of the drive system gaskets. There's really hardly any moving parts in these. Oh and the rear bearing was a giant pita to get off butni got her!

Today's oil is so much better than anything that was available when these were made that the PRESENCE of oil is what's important.
