Just saw an 80 gallon 6.5HP 175 PSI (16 SCFM) Dual Stage Delta air compressor for sale, which I’m now going to go look at tomorrow. Anyway, has anybody ever heard of a DELTA air compressor? Are these good? Bad? Any thoughts?

Did Delta actually make an air compressor or is this just something with their name on it?

Okay, so I went (with a trailer) and looked at it today AND I bought it. Bought it on a prayer and hopefully don’t end up with a 400 pound paperweight. The guy I bought it from had a great story and seemed genuine - said it worked and came from his body shop, and that he brought it home but then he never got around to running 220 to his garage and his plans for the garage had changed. Note that his garage was full of dirt bikes and other kid stuff.

Anyway, yes, I bought a massive 80 Gallon, 6.5HP 175 PSI 16.9 SCFM Dual Stage air compressor for $200 (yes two hundred dollars), and I was NOT able to test it. Tomorrow I’ll be changing the oil and plugging it in to my 220 extension cord, which I use for my BendPak and my COATS wheel balancer.

Stupid? Risky? Idiotic? Yes!!! Will it start??? Stay tuned.

If the motor or pump or tank is bad you still got a deal. One thing to keep in mind. That motor is at the high end to run directly from the pressure switch vs with a magnetic starter. If you are a diy/hobby user it will probably never matter. Still if there is a problem I would look at the contacts in that pressure switch. Happily they aren't expensive to replace if they go bad. It's a generic part, not brand specific.

Too busy with work today so I hope to get it fired up after work on Friday. Just need to do a quick continuity check on the wires since there’s three wires and they’re all black. Going to trace wires from the motor on back to validate which one is neutral, so I can put a 30amp connector on it for now (so I can test it). If it works, I’ll then plan on getting it hardwired since I now have three things in the garage needing 220. I shouldn’t ever need to run all three items (BendPak, wheel balancer, and an air compressor) at the same time, but I still feel the need to hardwire the compressor.

What are you guys with multiple 220 needs doing?

It's a 230V compressor. Both wires are hot (legs 1 and 2). That motor should be hard wired.

I don't see how you could go wrong for the money you paid, nice snag.

depending on the wire gauge & lenght of your extension cord, it may cause you problems on your compressor (voltage drop)

I have a 10 gauge 220 extension cord that’s about 20’ long that I use today for my 220 needs. My circuit breaker is 30 amp and it’s about a 30’ run to the sole 220 outlet in the garage. Of course, the air compressor will be sitting on the other end of the garage, about 20’ from the outlet. I just want to make sure it works before I hardwire it.

If you ever need parts for your pump, forget about going through Delta - that appears to be an ABAC/IMC American pump and there are plenty of places that you can get parts for it, such as here:

http://www.i90enter.com/b5900-pump-parts/

Thanks so much for the link. Per the manual (and from what I see on the back of the motor) it has built in thermal protection (with a bright red reset switch on the back of the motor) that will turn it off before it overheats. So, I’m hoping it works.

You will be fine at 20', at 240V amperage isn't affected a lot until you get out much farther than that.

IT WORKS!!! Works awesome! Talk about air for days. Wow! I have to wonder how much it will ever need to cycle once it’s full. I hooked up Big Nasty (same Astro air hammer as Eric O from Southmain Auto) and it just pulverized a 2X6, and it barely ate up any air. I bet I can easily do lug nuts on a car and fill up all four tires without needing to turn on the air compressor again. Just an amazing amount of air. Can’t wait to use this on my tire changer (COATS 7060EX).

Anyway, all I did to this $200 compressor was an oil change (1.5 quarts of SAE 30) and scraped off a ton of dirt/paint that had accumulated after many years while at the body shop. I also cleaned the air filter as best I could but I’ll be ordering a new one soon. Finally the squirrel cage was a little bent so I took it off and pounded it flat again - as good as new now. Then I went out and picked up an air regulator because the one that’s on now is broken. The only thing left now is to install a piped drain out to a ball valve.

Anyway, first running impressions is that it’s much quieter than what I expected from a 6.5HP motor. Seriously my 26 gal oil-less 2 stage Craftsman is just slightly quieter but not by much. Plus with the volume of air that this thing stores, I don’t expect it to ever run that long anyways.

I had a 60 gallon with that same pump & a marathon 6.5 hp motor that I just sold for 600 a few months ago. You got a good deal on it. The pump is quality, just on the loud side.

Got it plumbed last night and let it sit overnight to check for leaks. I need to put the compressor up against the right wall so that’s why there’s a down turn on my air manifold. One connection is for my COATS 7060, the other for shop air lines (50’ hose reel and other drops) and the yellow hose connection will stay in place for local air needs. Anyway, now researching what shop air lines to run. Thinking of going with either black pipe or one of the RapidAir Maxline kits.

Anybody use an auto drain on their air compressor? The reviews on Amazon are so hit and miss. I’d just hate to set one up and then have it get stuck open and keep the compressor running while I’m not there. Let me know if you have any experience with one of these.

Unless you have access to better pressure switches than the rest of us, I would put a magnetic starter on that thing. My 5HP Curtis burned the contacts on the heavy-duty pressure switch before I put on the mag starter.

What was worse, the contacts stuck in the on position and the compressor kept pumping past 175 PSI... fortunately I caught it before the safety valve blew.

In its new home now. By the way, I hooked it up to my tire changer and, wow, what a difference. It’s like my COATS 7060 was on steroids. The Robo assist arm was really quick.
