Well as the title states i just picked up my 1st vintage tool a delta drill press dp220 and for some odd reason i dont think its going to be my last. Kinda started with my odd attraction to old wilton vises expecially after seeing some of your guys post here now i have about 5 LOL.

Anyway i just picked up this dp220 local off craigslist and love the old cast look. It is in working condition just needs some TLC. I plan to do mostly metal work so i need the slow speed. I plan on doing a full resto if indeed this drill would be a good option for that if not then its back to searching.

I did use it for a 2" hole saw in 3/16 steel and the slightest bit of pressure and the motor would stop i can pretty much stop it with your pinky which makes me think the brushes are **** or just needs a new motor.

I ordered a 3 ball handle lever because even though it has the foot pedal im not a fan of the straight through bar. And a new chuck would be next since this one isnt perfectly true while its spinning.

Could someone tell me how you find out the year from the serial number. #45-1654

Your machine is from 1946 via this link: http://wiki.vintagemachinery.org/DeltaSerialNumbers.ashx

A 2” hole saw on a drill press with no low speed (intermediate) pulley is not going to do so well in steel. It is no fault of the motor, although I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt to clean and lubricate it. I certainly wouldn’t be getting rid of the press any time soon. The foot pedal seems to be quite sought after. I’ve got one on my Delta 17 and it does come in handy.

If your feeling ambitious, you could make your own intermediate pulley setup and then it would likely do just fine for metal work. FWIW, your spindle speed should be around 200 RPM on that 2” hole saw, if my math is correct.

Thanks for the info guys like i said im still new to these old gems and i quickly found out vintagemachinery website has lots of info. But figured id make my own thread to also show the restore and collect more info on it.

What do you guys suggest for replacement chucks that arnt out of this world on price and as for the motor is there such thing as restoring that with new brushes and such or do people just replace them or neither and what are some parts i should look into replacing or cleaning up are their bearings or bushings etc?

And ive seen a couple intermediate pulley setups that add a 3rd pulley on top of the main shaft ill start looking into that and if anyone has pics or ideas from their own please post it im excited to get this project going. Thanks in advanced.

Nice find, I also found one of these last week, mine does not have the foot pedal and is a couple years newer than yours. Post pics of your restore as you go, if you determine anything on the third pulley for slower speeds, let me know, I also would like to set this up on mine. Good Luck!!
