Delta DP220 [Now DP600 on page 2] questions

Should be picking this up in a couple days and have a few questions.
Sorry for the low res pics but they are from the auction.

Curious what the orange device might be, and what type of vice that is. Is that a sliding rail it is on? Also looks too clean to not be a restore so I wanted some thoughts on that. I have no idea what a new one looked like but the badge and the fact that the paint matches the Craftsman motor are clues to a restore.

I see they have the same size column as the Craftsman 150... I assume if I like this one more I could swap over my atlas table lift and slow speed pulley (might have to swap columns as well I suppose). I don't like that it uses funky hard to find spindle bearings however.

Just a clean old Delta. That it doesn't have the "arc of shame" on the table is a huge plus.

Thanks. I've looked though quite a few pictures and every one is a different color, and almost always beat to hell. My only (slight) concern is how that vise is attached to the table.

Any thoughts on these vs the Craftsman 150? I do like that this one is 25 years older. I suppose I will have to wait and see for myself.

I own one of these as well as a Craftsman 150 and they are both reliable, capable machines. You wouldn't go wrong with either one.

I wish I room for both!

Sure *seems* like there are a lot more cool accessories floating around for the deltas. Maybe that is a bad thing though.

Thanks, not sure we need to hide the info if it could help others. I've seen the threads on owwm and it looks like he does great work! Still 5x more then a regular bearing costs.

It appears to be in decent shape.

What is the date cast-into the underside of the table? I just sold one this past year that was in good operational shape. It was built during WW II/Battle of the Bulge. Mine also had the Predator/Aliens 'skull' belt cover still on it. I sold it to a guy who shipped that and other tools to Haiti, to set-up a small business.

I don't get to pick it up until Wednesday but I will check when I get it.

You can use “normal” bearings in those. The special bearings have to do with quick spindle changes.

Not sure if all DP-220 units were the same, But the older model DP-220's I've worked on all had the special upper pulley/bearing that had the built in extended inner race. (first two pics)

They also used special bearings in the spindle that had extended inner races with slots machined into them. Those slotted inner races break pretty easy when the drill pres is misused. (last pic)

I was speaking about the spindle bearings. Those slots on the inner race are not needed for normal drill press operation. The upper pulley bearing IS proprietary but available for not a lot of money.

Yeah I haven't tried using a regular bearing as a replacement, But I imagine they would work. However as you mentioned the interchangeable spindles would no longer fit, And that is a nice feature of the DP-220!

I believe they made 5 different spindles for the DP-220, But several of these can be hard to find.

Everything is home and I'm slowly going through it. The spindle does not seem to want to lower easily so I'll spray it down and see if it improves before taking it all apart.

Everything looks great and I'll at least get a few high res pics up tonight. The vise is actually an AMF branded float lock, without the quick release feature.

The head is so tiny! I think it would look much better as a bench top.

UPDATE:
Sprayed a little silicone down into the pulley and everything is good now. Curious how to adjust the spring tension so I guess I'll track down the manual. Fired it up and it hums along nicely.

Oh and I read the serial number wrong. It is 90, not 30 so that puts it at 1950.

Honestly I am now leaning toward keeping the Craftsman but that could still change.
That feed handle is just not going to work and I do use the speed lock quite a bit on my 150.

Well the craftsman won out and the Delta has moved on.
I do think if I ever find a deal on a 16" delta it would probably win the spot.

17", you want a Delta 17", those are the good ones, 16" is late model imported, nothing special. Did you keep the vise?

Well as luck would have it I did pick up a nice 17" yesterday. Sounds like a few people were interested so if you were trying to get the one in Lincoln Nebraska I apologise.

The difference between the 14 and 17 is pretty incredible once you see one up close. The weight and quality of the parts is amazing.

I have quite a few questions about the quill and motor but I need to get a few pics first.

Here are some pics of the motor and switch.
On the back of the switch there is a large forward/reverse handle.

Any guidance on how this needs to be wired for standard low voltage would be great.

Yeah...... I have one just like that. It looks to be in good shape.

"standard low voltage'.... Good luck, that is 3-phase......

Notice inside the switch box, there is L1, L2, L3. This is for the incoming 3-phase.
Do you have a phase converter? If not, start searching. I would recommend a rotary phase converter. I have the American Rotary Phase converter in the 7.5 hp size.

https://www.americanrotary.com/

You would not need one that size if it is the only thing you have 3-phase... If this is your only 3-phase motor, you could look at some of the inverter options.

The brass and red things next to the switch are called "heater". They are basically over-current protection for the motor and switch. They need to be sized correctly for the voltage. for example, if you convert from 440 to 220, the heater size changes. You might be ok since it looks like the motor was set at 220.

Let me know if you have questions.....

Regardless, nice find, what did you have to pay for it?

.....Honestly I am now leaning toward keeping the Craftsman but that could still change.
That feed handle is just not going to work and I do use the speed lock quite a bit on my 150.

Hold out for a DP-600 and you will dump the CM as well.

Yeah I figured it was 3 phase and this is my first one.
At this point I am just looking for the most economical way to convert with variable speed. I also got the open pulley guard for the front which was original to the machine. The large one was bought for the refurb.

Paid $250

Said it came out of a bomber plant in Omaha. One of the guys that worked with them grabbed it when they finally cleared them out a few years ago. He gave it to the seller to refurb and then had health issues so it was never completed.

I assume it was out of the Martin bomber plant unless they had more then one.
Unfortunately I think this one dates just after the war so it probably didn't help make anything truly significant. Still a small piece of history to keep around.

I would recommend checking out the VFD thread here on GJ. I don't have a VFD drive on any of my 3-phase stuff, but there is a lot of useful info in there.

Great find and thanks for sharing the history!

Ahh, I see. Not sure why I need to hold out for one then!
I did google first and the later model 16.5" came up.

Ok, another question. The quill has a mt2 male taper to hold the 'supreme chuck' which is damaged. The taper is bad and will no longer hold the chuck at all. Looking on ebay there seems to be several different types of quills so I need to decide if its worth fixing or just getting another one (and which one to get).

The chuck itself has a bad spot that catches on every turn and gets worse the tighter you go. This chuck also looks identical to the Craftsman one except for the supreme chuck label. Would like to keep the nicer one but not sure if the quality and taper are the same.

Delta Supreme Chuck:

The old 17" Deltas are also called a DP-600 based on their casting #.

If it's 3 phase you lucked out. Once you go with a VFD you'll never want to go back to belt/pulley changes.

I'd suggest a Teco L510 VFD with a remote control panel in front of the machine.

Lafester, most of the pics you posted today aren't showing for me, can everyone else see them? VFD definitely the way to go. I have both the early and later Delta 17" drill presses, don't think one is any better than the other, just wouldn't bother with an import (which are actually 16" or 16.5").

I think I'll stick with my 17 and kick the CM out the door, at least for now.
I'll see what the dp-600s are all about though.

AFAIK your 17-inch IS a DP-600. I think it will kick everything else out the door.

Which 17 is that? Your DP220 is a 15-inch.

I sold the 220 and brought home a 600 last night.

Are you viewing on tapatalk or web browser?

I've noticed tapatalk has been having issues loading pics lately.

I might start uploading them to the site again but got sick of all the problems with that as well.

Oh and I do put all of these in a public folder on google photos.

That's a nice 17". I have a 1966 slow speed that was originally three phase.
I stuck a 1.5 --1725 Marathon motor on it. I'd still like to do a DC VFD some day. It would make a good tapping press.
Think about it if your wallet is strong :) It's worth it for a fabricator. For a mechanic, not so much.
See if yours is the low speed. It it's for metal / Wood is the high speed(generally) there's a guy on eboy named Guerra machinery that had a slow speed pulley set.
Then there's the gear reduction slow speed attachment thats getting harder to find. REAL slow.

Yeah it has a slow speed spindle but the motor just has one pulley so I would need to find a multi speed pulley for it. With the parts I'm selling off the Craftsman 150 I should be able to do vfd, fix or replace the spindle and maybe find a regular table to bolt my vise on. Probably have to do the bearings while I'm at it. Pretty sure this was used a lot in its day, although I do believe it was for light duty work.
