Delta Drill Press Question - DP600 - Delta 17"

I believe I have a Delta 600 Drill Press with a speed reducer that I got off of CL. The major thing missing was the chuck with arbor. My question is what size taper do I need? I know these are readily available off Ebay, I just don't know what size arbor/taper I need to order. Any help would be great!

I plan to restore the drill press once I get the correct arbor/chuck.

Here's a link to my photobucket account:

Do you have one of those cheap electronic calipers? If so you can measure the diameter at each end of the taper and compare it to a Jacobs chart for the common sizes. My delta 14" has a Jacobs 33 but I think it varies a lot by the size of the machine

Probably 2MT, the 3 I have are. I think there was an option for 3MT, but I've never seen one. They're great drill presses.
Good luck, Jim

it depends. standard "short" spindle configuration had a male JT33. Delta also made a MT2 female spindle for use in industrial applications where you need to frequently change out a male MT2 chuck. The spindle is about 6" long with a slot to drive out the chuck with a tapered key.

The Delta speed reducer only fits on an MT-2 spindle, so if you have that on the drill press, your spindle nose is definitely MT-2.

Your drill press is the high speed model. Spindle speeds without the reducer installed are 700, 1150, 1750, 2750 and 4250 RPM. Speeds with the reducer are 150, 240, 370, 570 and 950 RPM; however, Delta recommended NOT using the two highest speeds on the high speed press with the speed reducer, because the input speed was higher than the speed reducer was designed for.

What 383 said is right I have one also and it is a Mt2 taper. good luck

BTW whats the ser# on that DP

Bisley45 - The serial# is 31-213. According to the vintage machinery website that would mean it was built in or around 1944. I would like to think it was used during WWII but there are no markings indicating that.

Thanks for the info WWIIjeep! I plan on keeping the drill press running at lowest setting for metal work. I hope to be getting a bench top Rockwell DP in the near future which will be running at the higher speeds for general use.

Nice machine. Just an FYI they are more commonly called a 17" delta drill press. You may get more hits searching for that compared to DP600.

Anybody know what the correct belt is for these machines? Mine is slipping real bad and since I am getting ready to clean and repaint it, I was planning on all new bearings and a belt. The length is no big deal, but it looks like a fairly narrow belt, I don't want to ruin my pulleys by running to wide of a belt. Keith

So I decided to go with new key less chuck. I looked at the Jacobs chucks with the MT2 arbor and they got pretty pricey. I hope this chuck works as described. From the reviews it looks like people are pretty satisfied.

I bought this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=331181899781&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:US:3160

Looks like the same one I have. http://www.ebay.com/itm/SHARS-5-8-P...1?pt=BI_Tool_Work_Holding&hash=item51a5cfcd35

I got it from Shars simply because I have bought from them before with no issues. I also have the 3/4" version for the tail stock on my lathe and another one in a fixture on my mill. So far I really like those chucks and they are very reasonably priced. Keith

Keith - From my understanding you can take your belt to the the auto parts store and have them match it up with a suitable replacement. I haven't had to do that yet.

Belt for a machine with matching slo speed pulleys and original frame size motor is an AX52 or A52, 1/2" X 54".

Edward, note that if you want to use your drill without the speed reducer, you will need to source a mount for the depth stop rod, as that mount is removed to add the speed reducer. Just went through this with a similar vintage (1943 I think) 17" Delta. Is your serial number tag metal or oil board? Mine has an oil board tag thought that was pretty cool, have a couple others with metal tags.
Good luck, Jim

Yep I've got the slow set of pulleys. My motor has been swapped to a Dayton. Pretty sure they used the chunk of 2x6 to get the pulley spaceing close to original. Now that I have the belt width I'll try to get one on my next day off. Keith

Jim,

I have the mount for the depth stop rod. I plan on using this drill only for metal work so it'll always have the speed reducer.

My serial number tag is metal.

Thanks
