I want to give a shout out to Scotty and the folks over at Legacy Industrial for saving my man cave floor.

I've been working on boxing off a 12' x 18' room at the back of my basement garage for a man cave / guest bedroom. The floor is pretty wavy, so epoxy wasn't really a good solution for me and I wanted to do something different with it. After looking at several different ideas, I decided to go with acid stain. On the advice of the local Sherwin Williams rep, I started with an acid etch and then sprayed it with H&C Infusion acid stain.

I cleaned the floor well and here is a shot of it after the etching.

I sprayed the stain and I was pretty excited about the way I thought it was going to turn out. However, when I mopped the floor after the stain had sat for 4 hours this is what I wound up with.

I think that the etching used up all of the available calcium and there was nothing left for the stain to react with. After a bit of panicked searching, I came across several posts on this board about Scotty and Delta Dye. I talked to Scotty the next day about what I was hoping for and sent him some pictures of the floor. He recommended a stain and I am really happy with how it turned out.

It's great to hear it turned out well with Scotty's help. I think you need a minimum of 5 posts for the images to work.

Thanks for the help with the pictures, Scotty! I've lurked this board a time or 2 over the years, but never joined. Now that I'm a member I may start a thread documenting my basement progress. My wife and I moved into our house last year and it had a full unfinished drive-in daylight basement. Money is tight, but I'm slowly making progress.

You mention the floor is wavy, how much? How well does the die hide it?

Floor looks good. Any plans to seal it?

My floor was ~3/4" high in a couple of places. I've seen horror videos of people who put down epoxy only to come back hours later and find uncoated concrete peaks in their otherwise beautiful floor. I feel like the stain does a great job hiding it. You can see it in my pictures if you know what you are looking for. Because you are applying a liquid, it slowly settles to the low spots. So, the lighter spots are high and the low spots are darker. I also had a couple of stains that I could not get out and I'm not unhappy with the way they turned out either. They are still there if you know it, but I've watched people when I show them the room and they are not drawn to the stained areas.

I have sealed the floor since these photos were taken and I'm about to put 4 coats of ZEP wax on it this weekend. Then I'm going to find me a cowhide rug and I'll be all set! :D
