I am 99% done with a delta 37-315 jointer restoration. The starter needs some rewiring other wise it is complete. Pics from the restoration of the jointer.
I purchased the jointer a couple hours north of me. I originally had a 6" 37-20 delta jointer with the cast iron base and loved that machine. After serving me for a few years I just have out grown it. The total length of both beds was the same aa just one bed of the new 8" jointer. Big improvement.
The jointer came with a 1hp 3 phase motor running on 220. I only have 1 220 outlet at the moment and my dust collection is running off it. so a change to a 1 hp 110/220 motor was in order. I was able to source two baldor motors, a 1 hp and a 2 hp for $90 total. Got the 1hp motor running and it purrs like a kitten. I haven't messed with the 2 hp unit yet. Hoping to find an older planer to use that motor on.
The jointer had a total of 7 layers of paint on it. I used a combination of citristrip and wire wheels to rove the rust. I tried a different soy based product but was not impressed with it's paint removing capabilities.
After the paint was removed I filled any holes that were made by previous owners they I wouldn't be using. The jointer was primed and then coated with dupli color ford dark shadow gray spray lacquer. Clear coated for more protection. I have used this on two other machines that I have and has held up well. Something different than the standard light grays.
Some parts needed to be located as they were missing. All of the metal parts were cleaned with a wire wheel. The motor base plate, framing, dust shoot, and pork chop where white wheeled and clear coated. The starter cover received the same treatment. I wanted to give it a little something else look wise and with the dark shadow gray I think it looks pretty good.
To help move the jointer around my garage as I don't have dedicated spots for my tools I made a mobile base. I added retractable castor's to raise and lower the base. I made cubbies on each side to help aid in any tipping issues as well as hold my grippers and the power cord.
