On my delta scroll saw I have a leak. I need some advice on how to properly repair it. I know in 1930's they didn't have what we have today, I'm sure they used leather to seal the saw.

I'd go to owwm.org or vintagemachinery.org. Link below. That's a pretty early model which looks like a Model 700. I owned several 24" models from the late 30's to mid 40's era (model 1200) which had a felt type packing material. Delta used a sort of cork washer for the model 700. You may be able to still purchase it through Delta but odds are you'd have to improvise and make something.

If a thick felt washer will fit under the brass cap, you might be able to make a washer out of a piece of furniture felt that is used under the feet of chairs and such to keep from scratching wood floors. :dunno:

Make it snug to the shaft and let it wear in with use.

Felt sounds good, I will try that idea, cork is what was used from the drawing that I've read.

I'm not sure about using cork, it seems that microscopic pieces would end up floating around in the oil???

Maybe I'm wrong, the wine bottles that were corked on Titanic held up well. :lol_hitti

I was able to repair the leak. The gasket was leaking and when I removed the old leather gasket and replace it with a rubber one it was gone.:willy_nil

My oil leak is pumping up through the tube (aprox 1/2' dia). I found a small tapered cork and am about to force fit it down the tube with a dowel, prior to reinserting the blade clamp assembly

Ill post results.
