Hey Guys...I have to start by saying I am not a very good carpenter. (Yet)

This is a small room in the back of our garage. The garage was built years ago...and was originally an old carriage house. I am planning on turning this room into an office. As you can tell by the pictures I've stripped the old drywall and what was left of insulation.

The bottom of some of these posts are rotten and in addition to adding new ones...I would like to just cut the bottom 4" off and attach a new base plate made from (2) 2x4s stacked. Will this work like I think it will?

Second...there is dirt and roots coming in at the bottom. I plan on cleaning this out and using hydraulic cement to fill in the void. Is this a good option?

Lastly do I need any sort of vapor barrier before I put in insulation and drywall? I dont think I do...but want to check. Since this is in a detached garage....would green board be better than normal drywall?

Anyone that has been in this scenario before...is there anything else I am missing or any other questions I should be asking myself?

P.S - This is a fun project for me to learn...I can afford to pay someone else to do it, but I think I can get through.

What is on the other side of the wall ? outside?

Anything structural ?

No need for hydraulic -- that's for fixing a hole -- large crack

I haven't done it but have read a couple of threads here about similar problems. Apparently it's not all that hard to support that wall while you cut out the bottom 6-10 inches. Depending on how that concrete floor is designed one repair method is install a course of block and then do your double bottom plate. This gets the wood up the height of the block off the outside soil which will go a long way to prevent a reoccurrence. Of course whether you do some block or go all wood you need good quality ground contact rated treated lumber. I understand there are actually 4-5 levels of 'treated' lumber and the good stuff may need to come from a real lumber yard vs Lowes or HD. I look forward to following your repair.

Yea let’s see the rest and from outside so we know the whole story. At a minimum you should be cutting the bottom off that whole wall and butting in a pt sill.
