Dented sockets.

While inspecting the new sockets I got, I noticed 2 of them had nicks in them, but too big to be a nick, more like a dent. A depression about 1/4" wide, and probably 1/8" deep.

Maybe I'm being overly ****, but it seems like a new socket should not have dents in them.

Would sears warranty something like this?

They should. That would cause a fracture point and would weaken the socket. You could probably use it for your whole life and not have an issue unless you abuse it with a large cheater bar and it cracks. If it were to crack due to stress it would likly crack through that point.

I agree, if I ever need anything quick... I'll go to Lowes. I've looked at the new Craftsman stuff and it's all junk, just my opinion. The new Craftsman stuff isn't anywhere near my old Craftsman.

As for the OP, I'd warranty them... there is absolutely no reason the sockets should look like that NEW.

+1 that you take to Sears and warranty them to get quality replacements.

This will give you more first-hand experience of how Sears is handling their interaction with Craftsman customers. You're now terrific Mystery Shopper to see what story that Sears salespeople say about warranty / product quality / COO / etc. Best way for you to decide if you'll trust Sears into the future!!

I bought alot of Craftsman sockets around Christmas because I was wanting some 12 pt and the chrome/general finish on a lot of them was rougher then I would have expected, nothing that seemed to take away from the function though.

My big beef with Craftsman chrome sockets is a solid 15-20% of them seem to rust for no reason what so ever, and I find more every day. Really pisses me off.

Actually having looked at the newer chines tools at sears. The finish on them actually seems to be a bit nicer the some of the usa laser etched ones. Almost as nice as the gw and kolbalt.

You get what you pay for. Production in the USA costs more, so they cut costs by lowering quality. Sure, they could make them flawless, but you're going to pay for it. The Kobalt may have a better finish, but they cut costs with lower wages in Asia.

Merk is by no means pro asian but, there was a time when he got some free Gearwrench stuff. Sarcasm is just another service Merk offers.

Back to the op's point, every manufacturer rides the QC roller coaster from time to time too include the tool truck brands. Unfinished sockets, wavy wrenches, mismarked socket sizes, offcentered wrench box ends, screwdriver blades not fully seated in handles, etc have all been documented in the pages of garage journal.

A new tool should be just that, new and free of defects. If you're unhappy, take it back.

For how cheap I got the Craftsman stuff I didn't really care that much, I mean some were less then 10.00 a set after sears rewards points are whatever. Anyways if one was to brake its easy to exchange.

Why not just use them? I have a couple like that, part of a set that was 60% off, so I can't complain too much. After a few years of regular use, you'll never notice it any longer.

I'll be damned, today I was using my craftsman 19mm 1/2'' drive 12 point and it too had a small dent. Worked fine on a square differential check/fill plug.

GearWrench is actually owned by Danaher....

By the way the dent was probably caused by part on part contact prior to heat treating.
