O.

I always welcome comments/suggestions/recommendations. I do enjoy learning new skills, and that means listening to people who know more than me. I do have fun and a sense of accomplishment when I take care of projects myself. And if it means that sometimes the end result is as good or better than if I had paid someone else to do it, all the better. I don't have any garage updates today, but I think you'll approve of the reason.

By finishing off the siding, the pile of wood is gone and some space has opened up. But nature abhors a vacuum or, in other words, friends fill open garage space (I'm guilty of this, too). So... the photo shows a new toy that a friend brought over. I spent the day going through the car, replacing a few things and adjusting a bunch more. It definitely needs sorting but its a great starting point. Best part: no rodent nests!

Looks like a beauty! Expensive too :)

The car was surprisingly inexpensive given today's market. I felt bad for the seller... until I went through the car. By the end of the day I felt like my friend was rescuing the car from a bad situation. Painter's masking tape, zip-ties, duct tape, wire nuts, and etc are NOT meant to be permanent automotive fasteners, yet that's what I kept finding. I also found enough cross-threaded, stripped and wrong sized fasteners that I was actually hoping to see more zip-ties. After the first few, I realized the pattern that the previous owner used machine oil on the fasteners that gave him any trouble. Luckily the drivetrain was maintained by a local reputable shop. It's a solid car but it just needs the little details fixed.

Ooooh - The garage visitor is intriguing - can't wait to hear more about it!

PS: Great work on the siding. It's really looking good!

Looks like the 912 is in decent shape. Will take zip ties and some cross threaded fasteners over rodent nests any time! Your friend has a great car.

Thanks JB! The 912 is a great little car, I just hope he leaves the paint alone. I'm not a fan of the faux-patina trend, but this one is authentic and has a look that tells you it's history. The problem is that it goes, stops and turns like its new to so there's the urge to make it look like new, too.
Ody, rodent nests are terrible. At our previous house in the backwoods of NH, I was constantly evicting mice and chipmunks. The nests would seemingly pop up overnight. And don't get me started on their little stashes of food....

There aren't any big updates that are photo worthy, just lots of little details. Along with all the trim and paint, I was able to wire the exterior sconce on the far end of the new cedar wall. Also at that end, I've started on the wall that will go from the back corner of the bedroom where the large window is now mounted. This is the beginning of the wall that will create the private courtyard.

I have a bunch of holesaw wood pucks so I thought of a way to put them to good use. I have a problem with steering wheels - I don't want to say how many I have, but its more than any sane person would have laying around. So, I picked up an aluminum c-channel and some aluminum mini cleats for hanging artwork. The photo shows a puck on the left, and one that I've cut a smaller hole (for the horn button) and mounted onto plywood. They're then painted, drilled and the Eagle Clip mounted.
attachment.php

Here's a photo of a test fitting. The c-channel does a good job disappearing once painted. I just need to finish painting the wall before I glue and screw the channel.

Cool. So how many do you have? Are most vintage or off cool cars?

At this point there's probably a couple dozen. They're mostly older leather MOMOs, including flat spoke, stacked logo and signature series. There's a few rebranded as Alpina (3- and 4-spoke) and Abarth thrown into the mix. I have a few Nardi/Personal and Les Leston wheels. For OEM, there's a fatty Porsche Carrera and a few Petri and Motorsport wheels for BMW. Between the packing for moving (and never unpacking) and then having to store stuff during the garage build, I haven't seen some of them for a few years. I opened a box a while ago to find a wheel for a friend and took this photo:

That's a lot of prototipo.
LOL. I always liked that style. A three spoke wheel with holes in the spokes always screamed "sports car" to me. IMHO, the Prototipo is the epitome of sport steering wheels.

I like the two lefts one in the top row, which models are those?
The wooden wheel on the left was made by Personal in the late 60s. The next one in is one of my favorites, the Petri sport wheel for the early 70s BMWs. They made three sizes: the 35cm is most commonly in the 2002 and the 38cm and 40cm wheels were most often in the 3.0 CS/CSI/CSL coupes. The one in the picture is 38cm.

I finally got back to finishing the siding around the square window at the corner of the addition. I thought everything was going great with the top horizontal cedar board... until the sound of wood splitting. The bottom left corner of the window was tight enough that it grabbed the board and caused a split. This was already the second attempt at this board and the chip isn't TOO obvious, so I kept going with the aluminum trim and T1-11 siding that I trimmed earlier. This marks the completion of siding for the garage addition and the house. (I will be replacing the siding on the other side of the house and front part of the garage, but that's a future project)

That steering wheel collection will serve very nicely as garage wall art! Something about this era of wheels that just tells a story.

I'll turn to you if I ever think about replacing the original wheel in my e12. :)

Thanks guys! More than just wall art, it would be great if each wheel had a car to call home. But... Time. Space. Money. Mostly money.

I got notification from Lowes that the insulation for the ceiling finally arrived so I borrowed my friend's truck again. You might remember this truck from the fun cedar siding trip a few months back. The packs were smaller than I thought (they really compress the batts into the plastic wrap) but still big enough that it took a couple trips to get them home. I forgot to take photos until after I had already started installing them.
attachment.php

I had most of the insulation up a few hours later. I still need to get it between the joists that are home to the lights and their wiring. With the R23 and R15 insulation in the ceiling and walls, the garage is better insulated than the house. Now I'm waiting for the lumberyard to get my T&G 1x8 order in so I can close it all up.

Exactly! My old, atrophied muscles were not happy yesterday, particularly my shoulders. Ouch. This is my first exposure to rockwool and I found it way better to work with - stays in place and much less itching.
No updates to show. I just spend a bunch of time trying to track down a place to get laminate sheets for the counter tops and cabinet faces.

Hi Steve,
We looked into some of the patterned FOrmica but ruled them out for the cabinet faces. It is still possible for some to show up on select horizontal locations. The problem seems to be the availability: they show up online and in catalogs but the dealer says "not available". One of the companies is offering custom prints based on artwork you send them but the SO vetoed that idea because she knew it would be auto-related.

Speaking of auto-related, no garage updates but I spent yesterday with some friends - breakfast, check out a Mclaren-Elva, drive in the mountains, hang out at a garage.... The photo is from somewhere above Golden CO

That "somewhere" is just past Wondervue summit headed west on Coal Creek Canyon. I drive that road frequently headed up to Nederland from Denver to ride mountain bikes. Killer road in both directions when you get a clear run.

Looks like that was a fun day. Most always up for a drive when the weather is nice!

Let me know if you are ever in the area!

You know the road well, that's exactly right  It was a Saturday morning so it was a bit crowded. Plus, it was a beautiful day and with overlapping springbreak schedules there was higher Eldora ski traffic. But overall it was a good day.

Today's update: I picked up the T&G 1x8 boards. I unloaded them at the front of the garage to motivate me to finish the ceiling - Can't move car until boards are used up.

Yeah, may not have been the best decision. I haven't gotten much done this week with a couple cold fronts (no priming/painting), spring break for area schools (see below) and now my mother in-law is visiting.

FYI, wilsonart has a couple boomerang patterns sold through HD.

https://www.homedepot.com/s/wilsonart%20retro%20renovation?NCNI-5
Thanks Brent! I had stopped by HD and they told me that I can order laminates online, but then it's possible that they cancel the order if there is no stock at the supplier. I had them check on a couple and, sure enough, one of them was not available. She told me to come in when I've decided which to get and have them check on availability prior to ordering. With the possible exception of an out-of-date-looking website, HD was the least expensive.

Garage update: I decided that I prefer getting the first coat of paint on the T&G boards before putting them up. I haven't made much progress because I couldn't prime or paint with the cold temps on a couple days, but I managed to get a few boards hung. I hope to get half of the ceiling done by the end of the weekend.
attachment.php

As I mentioned above, the schools are on spring break and one of my friends needed to find something to keep his son busy. I made a push for karting. I couldn't say no when he invited me along. First time for his kid and by the third race he was pushing for the lead.

BoilermakerFan - I'm still working on trying to get some interesting color/pattern into the cabinet design. I also found a couple other sources for laminates that I'm waiting on replies about availability and shipping. But, it's starting to sound like the laminates are just drop shipped from the manufacturer, regardless of seller.

UPDATE - I was able to get out to the garage enough this weekend to reach my goal of getting half the ceiling done. And once again, my shoulders are killing me.

The new ceiling looks good! Will you do furring strips to the other section to run the boards in the same direction, or will they run perpendicular to the section that is done?

you really are killing it with this place. The light you have in the workshop space, bright finishes, good floors and big windows. Definitely looks like a great place to work.

Cant wait for the kitchen updates too, the flush mounted drawers look very nice.

Hi Steve, all the new boards are parallel with the ones in the original section of garage. I just finished the other side this morning - see photo. I was hoping to find a way to fit the boards around the hurricane straps so that I wouldn't have to hide gaps between the beam and ceiling with trim. I failed. It will need a trim strip to cover the gaps but the trim will also hide the nail heads. I'm also hopeful that the black paint will help blend the trim into the beam. I'll shoot some photos when I get to this stage that will show what I'm trying to explain.

Looking very nice. The finish details take the most time and patience. Nice attention to the details!
Thanks jimmie! Finishing often seems to go slow because the little details don't add up to much at the end of the day. But I'm really into the little details so I'm having fun.

Thanks! I'm starting to get serious about the next phase: cabinets. I'm thinking that the garage cabinets should take most of the summer, if not fall. Then, I'll probably start on cabinets for the master bathroom. The kitchen is likely going to be on the waiting list until next year...

Hurricane straps are a pain. I've got a similar issue in my garage. Some were mounted higher than others and I am left to deal with the difference when installing my wall covering. Like you, I plan on covering the tops with a piece of trim.

I don't have many structural updates this week because I was busy with some landscaping. I picked the hottest days so far this year (mid-70s) to start with the drainage. Here is where it is today, I'm at least a ton of gravel short of being able to finish but the snow and rain in the last couple of days suggest that the work completed to date is working. The photo shows a section of the french drain and some landscaping boulders I had piggybacked on the gravel delivery.
attachment.php

Despite all the completed garage work, there is still room for only one car in the garage. I need to do some work on the BMW that is stored in a friend's garage so we organized a time to swap the 911 for the CS coupe. But first I took a photo of the 911 in the garage. It's for the "garages in the daytime" thread.
attachment.php

Of course we couldn't just move cars around, so along with a couple other friends, we went on a drive. I was happy that the car started right up after being ignored for a while and, with the exception of a few known issues that I need to repair, performed well on the drive.

Cool! Looks like nice progress is being made. Have always liked the CS coupes. Know too that drainage is a royal PITA but necessary. Keep up the great work!

Thanks Ody! One more box checked: I had more gravel delivered and finished the drainage. We'll see how well it's executed in the next few months when (if?) the thunderstorms arrive. There's a small change of plans because my wife wants more privacy - The wall extending out from the master bedroom window is now a priority.

The coupe is a great counterpoint to the Carrera, more of a GT. It's fun to drive but clearly not as responsive as the 911, but also not designed to be that way. Also, it looks like I'll probably be headed your way to see the LeMay BMW exhibit (and to visit inlaws) in the next couple months.

So awesome. We just got ~14" of snow in central Wisconsin. Seriously thinking about quitting my job and moving. The roads here are garbage, flat, boring, not scenic, the winters aren't even winters anymore, colder than CO except we don't even get snow anymore. Snowmobile trails were open 3 days all year. I hate this place. So jealous that you can get to canyons.

Good to read you will be here in the PacNoWest.

We just had a tour of Peter Gleeson's BMW collection. Not just cars, but "The" cars. Many very important and uber rare cars in his collection. Just google him. He has several cars at the museum on display now and will be rotating more through over the next year.

Also, have several passes for the LeMay Museum and parking passes. If interested, PM me and I'll send them to you. We get the SLS back the end of this month from the museum.

Here is a shot of a little trio of cars that found their way to Pt. Ludlow for breakfast this morning... Couple of Fords and a 991 50th Anniversary P-car. Back roads of Jefferson county... Very fun.

Hey Cash, I was just thinking that I haven't seen your replies in a while. Hope all is well. We were very unhappy with our previous jobs before moving here. It took a bit of patience before the right opportunity came along, but it did. Keep your head up!

Nice breakfast club!
Peter's collection is very well known in the BMW community. It seems like every BMW-themed exhibit has one of his cars on loan. We have several friends in common, but I have yet to meet him.

I just wanted to acknowledge that this thread has hit its 200th post - Thanks to all GJ'ers for offering encouragement and advice.
