I'm going to put together an emergency repair kit for my car, in case something happens roadside. This is what I think might be good to put in:

Duct tape (for rad hoses etc.)
Adjustable spanner
Big vice grips
One of those screwdrivers with a built in bit holder

What else?

That's easy. I assume the worst case on-road situation and go form there.

For example: it's raining, it's dark and cold, you've got a flat, or radi hose busted and you're in a tux on the way to a hot date.

--tire plugger kit (the ones with the sticky strips of rubber, rasp and insert tool.)

--fix-a-flat

--small air compressor

--flashlight / head-light

--electrical tape.

--rain coat / poncho

--sweatshirt / old jacket

--tarp (for the ground)

--latex gloves

--one of those Cresent all-in-one tool kits from Kragen / autozone in a fitted case for about $50-$120.

the list can go on and on. try searching for off-road checklists, you'll find a plethora of info!

as always my 2.5c

Can of fix-a-flat, a few feet of .030 wire, jumper cables, 12 volt droplight, hammer, tow strap, a 4X2 tarp (to lay on, get under for the rain) some spare fuses, and a Big Ole LEATHERMAN Tool! That's all I can think of. Of course a cell phone and a mastercard solves most problems, most of the time.

AAA, flares/reflectors, jumper cables, Crescent tool kit (I'll second that, cheap, but effective and small for riding in the trunk, and everything is held in well and won't move around on ya. Plus, it'll have most of the tools you need). Flashlight, tarp, poncho (like $.50 at walmart), I have a full size spare, so no F-A-F or plugs for me, if it's that bad I have AAA. Duct Tape & elecrical tape, maybe a wire stripper. I also like adjustable wrenches.

Specialty: since I'm into audio and air ride suspension, I'd make sure to pack some extra fuses, air line, fittings, etc. There may be a couple of items like you need that nobody else would, keep that in mind too.

A candle......if your in a cold area for winter and your stuck in the car in blizzard conditions a simple candle will heat the car enough for you to keep you from dieing

pretty much what everybody else mentioned. But keep in mind, you want it to take up as little space as possible. Be careful with fix-a-flat, tires with this stuff can blow up on tecs when they go to change them. Just something I came across.
