Hello All,

We are in the design phase of the garage. Looking for opinions on placement in proximity to house.

We have two options - one within 10 feet of the house but the garage would need to stick out further than the front of the house.

Second idea is to move the garage further away from the side of the house and line up with the front of the house.

Thoughts? Opinions?

How about behind the house?

My garage is behind my house. It means people have a hard time seeing all the tools I have and what I'm working on.

Has a few advantages....

1. People don't see your tools.

2. More privacy. If they don't see you working on stuff, they don't complain

3. If you have little kids, you can keep them contained and still have them around without worries of them walking out in traffic.

4. You have a lot more room in front of the garage for working on things.

5. Depending on the size of the garage and yard, you have a lot more potential storage behind the garage.

Check for setback requirements with city, hoa, etc. They may not allow a garage to stick out in front of a dwelling.

I find I worked more in my old garage that was attached then my new garage which is 45ft. from the house. I tell my wife its because I love her and in the old garage we could leave the door open and talk while she was in the living room and me in the garage but in reality I don't know why. The new garage is much nicer (bigger) but if I had to do it over again (nope, never moving again in my life) I would build the garage as close as possible to the house or attached.

Personally, I would line them up or if at all possible offset the garage to the back. Also provides more generous parking area.

Welcome to GJ!

Please put your location in your profile.

Many places do not allow building to be closer than 10' to each other. What is your zoning and what are your zoning regulations?

We need more info on your lot and plans and photos...
