Good morning,

We live in South Carolina and have just built a detached garage. Do we need to spend money on insulation if we do not plan to convert it to a living space?

We are going to drywall the garage and have to decide now if we want to insulate. We would appreciate help in understanding if the extra cost to insulate is worth it. Thank you, Penny

Here in New York its required by code but I would agree with the above it is generally a good idea if you are going to be spending any time in the garage or certainly if you are going to heat / air condition it.

I am in NC and can say that my little building becomes unbearable in the summer to be in. I plan on adding insulation in the future to help since I am not planning to cool or heat it full time. A fan in the summer and a small oil heater in the winter for when I'm in it working on something.

I would contact your local building department and ask them before you do anything. From what I understand, South Carolina is really difficult to build in. Years ago I heard South Carolina was so difficult they would fine a contractor for submitting a price to do a job without a license. Be sure to know what the use of the garage is also. I would recommend having all your electrical, mechanical, etc. rough ins completed before installing insulation.

What are you planning on using the garage to do?
