I plan on staring a detached garage in the Spring. I am having a hard time deciding on 28wX36d or 36wX28d or something in between. I am limited to 1017.5sqft.

If I go 36wX28d, I plan on having a 2-post lift bay with a 10' wide door and the other 2 bays will have an 18' wide door. The 27' interior depth would accommodate my current boat and truck but if I decide to get a longer boat, it might not. Would a 27' depth bay be adequate for a lift and working area in front? The largest vehicle I plan on having is a crew cab long box.

If I were to go with a 36' deep garage, I only have two bays and some space in the rear for tool boxes etc. This would allow me a larger boat without worry. I'm not sure how best to place the lift in a 28x36.

My attached garage is 24'deep and I plan to have the daily drivers in there.

My first garage was a 28d x 36 wide. 28' was a good depth even with my Silverado extended cab longbed. Still had room to walk around. My addition is 28w x 36 deep with a 2 post lift along one wall. By doing that, I could only go with a 9' lift, 10' walls, and scissor trusses, but all worked out fine for me.

This is a layout that I am thinking would be most practical in a 36w setup. It would allow a lift with its own 10' wide door. I am also thinking scissor trusses to allow for more lift height and radiant tube heater.

What size boat? With a removable or swinging tongue you could probably get to 25' craft, +3ft for a stern drive, an outboard motor would be of course less length.

My current boat is about 23.5' on trailer. I installed a swing tongue on this trailer to make it fit my attached garage. I'm sure the trailers that come with the swing tongue would be a little shorter for the same size boat.

I think you need to determine how realistic the bigger boat scenario is. There's a big difference between "maybe someday" and "a good chance in the next year or two". I'd personally prefer the 36' wide three bay scenario for its day-to-day convenience, but if a bigger boat is in the near future, you almost have to go with the 28' wide two bay option.

28' deep is workable. I was limited to 1000sf after I got the township to increase from 600sf. I'm 23.8' by 42. 23.8' is doable with 17' long race cars. 28' should be nice.

You'll appreciate the additional width. Pay close attention to the positioning of the garage doors, that will dictate the depth of benches/storage along the sides.

Good luck!

I'm not a habitual upgrader and I tend to take good care of my things so I also tend to keep them a long time. I just upgraded to this boat last year and if I were to go much bigger it would most likely reside in a slip on a lake.

Thank you for your info. Do you have a lift in the garage?

If I were to go with the 28w by 36d option this is what I come up with. I need to push the lift as far back as possible to be able to comfortably pass it while backing in the boat. I would like to add a door on the long wall towards the back for getting the mower and smaller things in and out but I'm not sure if I will be able to do that with the grade.

My attached garage is three cars and the outside dimensions are 24 x 36. Currently I have a refrigerator park behind my pick up and my toolboxes behind my Econoline van. 24 x 36 is the perfect size for a garage in every way. Lots of room to swing the door open and get out and walk all the way around the car.

Where my garage is lacking is storage space for toolboxes and work benches and such. The additional 4 foot on any of the walls would be more than enough room to serve this need. I would think about what location makes the most sense for you to be working out and use that to decide. My inclination would be 28 feet deep and 36 feet wide.

I have decided on 34 wide by 30 deep. It will be on a 42" footing with about half of the perimeter on a 4' tall poured concrete wall and the other half on a 2' tall poured concrete wall to compensate for the grade. There will be 1 36" man door, two windows, and 2 overhead doors (10'x10' and 16x10'). The ceiling will be 12'6" from the floor. Due to the unseasonable weather here in Michigan right now, the concrete contractor may be able to pour soon.
I plan to have a two post lift installed in the bay that has the 10' wide OHD down the road. What other recommendations do you all have?
