Detached Garage with Stairway - Lights Needed?

Greetings.

The garage I'm wiring is built with 12/12 attic trusses. I have flooring upstairs in the 'living area' of the trusses but the knee wall areas are still open to below. In time I will likely finish this area but for now it's just "storage". That said, I wasn't going to put lighting up there for now as I don't want the inspector to consider this anything other than attic storage. Sort of like throwing a couple of sheets of plywood up on regular trusses so you have some extra storage.

I do however have a staircase going up there. I don't know if this would be considered different than a ladder or a pull down attic ladder, etc in terms of access.

When I look at electrical codes I see references to lighting requirements at landings of staircases for dwellings. I get that for a house. Would a detached garage with a staircase require a light at the top and bottom on 3-way switches to meet code or am I OK for now not having lighting there? Frankly, with all the openings to below along the sides you have a fair amount of light coming from downstairs especially on the stairs. Not a big deal to put it in and I will eventually but would prefer to wait on that if I can get by inspection.

thx.

It all depends on the building code that applies to your building. Does the applicable code that says lights must be near top and bottom of stairs specifically have an exception for your garage? Ask your inspector.
