I have a detached garage at our townhouse, 20x20 I believe and it shares walls with two other units. I'm considering turning the space into a home office / car parking spot but it is not insulated or cooled at all. I have a sub panel on the garage to support the main townhouse units AC system and then two 110v circuits. One for lights and the garage opener and then one I added for regular use.
I have access to the attic and currently store bins of our kids clothes and such she is outgrowing, etc. Plus a cache of car parts I should sell off.
my question is, how do I insulate the garage? I know of spray foam, fiberglass roll insulation, and the blow in. I'd like to still utilize the attic to store bins so blown in is out. If it helps the garage faces North East, Id like to insulate the garage door too, I just need to figure out which 1.5" foam to use and get the tension springs adjusted by a professional.
as far as heating and cooling I am limited on my power at the panel. I cant get more power to the sub panel since the wiring from the main panel is probably at its rated max. I cant upgrade my main panel because, townhome.... I am highly considering a solar powered mini split system with a battery bank to power it through the night as well as any other things I may need. I dont need 40 kwh of standby power. Just enough to maintain the environment in the garage once cooled.
