Hey guys,

Costco up here in Canada has a Devilbiss 25 gal oil-less upright compressor priced at $300. Did some research and the Devilbiss website links to Porter Cable as more compressors under the Devilbisss name.

So turns out this compressor is a relabelled Porter Cable compressor. When I click to download the manual it goes to a Dewalt site and the Owners Manual lists the manufacturer as Black and Decker!! :headscrat

So that is 4 different brand names connected to this one compressor. The box in the stores lists it as 'assembled in the US with domestic and international parts'.

Anyways, any thoughts on this compressor? I need it to be small (space constraints in the shop) and I was under the impression 5.4CFM @ 90 psi would be reasonable to run a few air tools for a casual guy.

The oil-less direct drive has me thinking it will be super loud! But maybe the newer tech oil-less aren't so bad?

Also, it has a cut-in pressure of 120psi and a cut-out of 150 psi. This is quite different than the usual cut-in of 95 psi and cut out of 125 psi. Anybody have experiance with such compressors, how do they compare to each other?

Lastly, another alternative is this compressor for sale locally:

Which is a oil-lubed belt driven compressor but only8 gallon tank. How big of a deal is the smaller tank? They are both rated at 5.4CFM @ 90 psi so they should both perform the same right?

This Makita is 8-9 years old, was it made in the USA? Quality stuff?

Thanks guys

Tim

Black & decker owns porter cable. They also make all the devilbiss excel products. FYI Black & decker also owns delta and dewalt brands.

Are the porter cable compressors any good? Fleet Farm here has an 80 gallon 6hp 15.6 CFM @ 90 psi compressor for $819 which seems like a great deal...

The new oil-less ones MAY be quieter, but probably only slightly. The problem is they have to run at high-speed to get any kind of reasonable volume, and that generates a lot of noise. A diaphram compressor has a very small volume per "stroke" therefore, it needs multiple strokes to make up the same volume as a single stroke of a piston compressor. Hence, the high-speed.

Unless you're going to use it infrequently, you'll probably be dissapointed with the oil-less.

Thanks Mike,

Though I have heard some people say their direct-drive compressors aren't that loud.. maybe they have lower RPM motors with big volume pumps (directly driven by the motor of course).

Anybody have a Porter Cable upright?

Good seems like a much better value for the same specs than an IR or comparable... ($400 price difference).

Although I would take an oil lubed compressor over and oil less any day of the week, i'd pass on the Makita as any longevity you would have picked up by being oil lubed is surely negated by that 9 years of probably rough service. It doesn't look like it was loved, that's for sure.

A few years back I had traded an amplifier for an oil less compressor and I have to tell you, they are annoying to say the least. If you can't swing a two stage, do yourself a tremendous favor and save your pennies for a new 60 gal. upright, oil lubed single stage compressor. It will satisfy anything you do now or in the future, last longer and maintain a level of sanity in the shop.

I dunno... I have both oil less and oil lubed 110vac units and I would probably take my chances on that old Makita *if the price was right* ($50)

If noise is an issue I'd go with THIS unit. It is without a doubt the quietest oilless compressor I've heard. You can carry on a coversation with only slightly raised levels of voice.

I'd skip the Makita. It was designed to operate nail guns and staplers, not impacts and ratchets.
