Hey guys, I found this beast on CL. I can't hardly find any info on this other than replacement part websites. any body have any experience with a Devilbiss 6.5hp, 80 gal, 2 stage air compressor or one of it's other portercable/delta cousins? I've been told that it sat for 7 years, would that cause an issue?

That appears to be nice 2-stage compressor with 17 cfm @ 100 psi.

As long as compressor was stored inside in California, I can't see what could go wrong with 7 yrs sitting idle (except maybe mice/rats chewing on wires or setting up nest).

If you buy, just run it enough to warm up oil once you get it setup, then change out the oil. Good idea to clean/replace the air filter as well.

Worst thing would be water sitting in the bottom of tank all those years. I'd open the water drain as soon as you get there and see what comes out of bottom of tank. That will be your bargaining chip if any water does indeed come out.

You seen it in person yet?? Any wiggle room on price as I'd try for $200 to $300 if he'll bite (ie explain "problem" of it sitting idle, blah, blah, blah).

If you can hear it run $400 sounds ok, if not it's a **** shoot.

This... Kind of a strange ad. He makes it sound like you won't be able to hear it run. So you are basing the workings of a compressor on that of a total stranger. It is not that great of a compressor. Rather high RPM pump.

I love when people put $500 in the ad title, then state they will give it to you for $400 in the ad :lol_hitti. Which he says he is firm on because he wouldn't be able to replace it for twice that much. Just another case of folks overvaluing their stuff. I can just see you purchasing it and it doesn't work. Call him up and all he has to say is "It worked last time I used it"

Photos aren't that good, condition doesn't look that great. Are you a gambling man?

Thanks for the input guys! I am hesitant on buying it without hearing it run because last time I bought a compressor off CL (portable 30somethin gallon 3hp for $150) it pumped for a few seconds the slowly come to a stop then fried the motor. Not looking to throw away money like that again.

IDEA: If you want to see it run, line up a portable generator and rig up the 240v plug ready to splice into wiring on compressor. Bring along air hose and blow nozzle and you can watch pressure build up in tank, then blow it off ; then repeat and see how quick it rebuilds pressure.

Also, if you buy the compressor I'd work up a BILL OF SALE that has a 30 day warranty that Seller agrees compressor is working condition and guarantees it will run as intended, or full refund plus your costs incurred. This would cover you against DOA.

Good luck . . . if it was short driving distance, I'd sure go check it out.

If someone asked me for a bill of sale with a warranty id tell them to go pound sand lol

If you can get him to run it and then empty it a few times i say buy, if not pass on it.

The air delivery specs of 16-17 SCFM tell me its not an actual 6.5hp. Most likely its about 4 hp, as a real, true 5 hp two stage will deliver a solid 18 SCFM. This is not unusual, as the compressor manufacturer, especially on one that old, used a bogus starting HP number that is meaningless.

If it runs, its a OK deal however.

That appears to be nice 2-stage compressor with 20 cfm @ 90 psi.

Look again, its 17.4 SCFM at 100 psi. The 20 is the cubic inches of pump displacement.

I've got that exact compressor. I traded for it and got it for next to no investment. Of course the dude said it ran perfectly. Turns out the motor had crapped up and I had to buy a replacement. That wasn't cheap but I'm still happy.

I did also replace the pressure switch with one I bought online. The old one leaked as well as every other place that had been sealed. Now it holds pressure indefinately and supplies all the air I need.

The pump is a bit loud and I need to find a quieter intake filter...

Thanks for all the input guys! I've decided to not get this compressor and pinch my pennies to save up for a Quincy 5-HP 60-Gallon Two-Stage QT Pro Air Compressor Model 2V41C60VC from aircompressorsdirect.com.

i have one, but mine is orange. runs well, but like someone said above me, It had some leaks at air joints. I would not pay $500 for it though. I got mine for $300 about 7 years ago.

Funny, i just ran across this thread.....I bought that air compressor from the guy in Alpine.....I ended up getting him down to $300 and he included a 30 amp disconnect..... Even got the previous invoice from its original purchase. (its out of warranty though)

I changed the oil, power washed it, and replaced the plastic site glass because I cracked it. So far so good. It cuts in at 120psi and 45 secs later cuts out at 150psi.

I guess I got lucky!

Ok. I know it's an old thread but I recently bought one pretty much like it. Most of the numbers are rubbed out but the tank says it was built in 1999. Just a few questions. It's supposed to be 175 but it kicks off at 150. Where does yours kick off? The previous owner did replace the pressure switch I believe. Also, there appears to be a piece of white something..yarn,plastic, something in the site glass. It's bugging so I want to take it out. How hard is the window to replace? One last thing. I have to turn the air valve about 50 times to fully open it. Is this normal? Thanks

(its out of warranty though) He even let me in his home at which point his 21 year old hot wife came out wearing only a smile and a thong...She then led me to the bedroom where her twin sister was waiting and the three of us made animal love, as the husband loaded up the compressor into my truck...

Gotta love these one post chumps....(Ok, maybe I spiced it up a little, but I still smell some suckage here...)

Ok, Mr Tampa. What reason would i have to make us such a story? I included the detail of Alpine, which was not in the original post. Secondly, That was my first post because I felt compelled to respond to this thread hence the my first post.

Mr aafadca, my compressor cuts out at 150psi, and cuts in at 120psi. I also replaced that main valve with a ball valve so that i can get a positive shut off. and not have to crank it 20 times to open and close it. Im happy with it, next step is to pipe the intake to the outside, seems there is alot of noise coming from there, Im trying to get it as quiet as possible.

So, an update on the compressor..... It developed a leak on the head gasket.....
So I disassembled it and found a tear in the gasket....
I spent about $75 for a new gasket torqued down the heads properly and its back up and running..... and I decided to add an hour meter to it know when to change out the oil.....and I changed out the oil plug and gasket....

Mine is running fine too. I changed a few things like adding the ball valve, changing the air filter intake, putting a new air valve and pressure switch on and an extended drain on the bottom. Now I'm just trying to decide which filter/silencer I want. I made it to accept 3/4 inch threads.

I came across this 10 year old post somehow...

Compressor is still running like a top, only had to change a belt so far.

I wonder what happened to this internet bully? I love how people like this encourage new people to the forums.

Don't be too quick to judge. To be told "you ****" around here is a compliment. It means you got a smoking deal on something.
