Well my old faithful 18V nicad dewalt drill finally died on me today. Can't blame it, it's been to hell and back (left out in the rain, dropped off ladders). It's time for a new drill/driver and impact. I want to stay Dewalt since I've had great luck, and a service center right next to me. Lucky for me I have a Lowes 10% off coupon.

Use: Mostly DIY projects and such. I do some electrical for family and friends, along with some very light construction. Things like laying wood/laminate flooring, putting up wainscot, maybe a fence or deck every blue moon or too. Just the general handyman stuff.

It's ridiculous how light both these sets are. Compared to Milwaukee or Makita, even the 20V is light, but the 12V is ridiculous. I've never had experience with a 12V, so I don't want to buy the combo and find out it's underpowered. At the same time, why pay more for a heavier drill and impact and I don't need?

Looking for your guy's feedback on either of these sets. How do they work in similar jobs?

^^THIS

I can understand how you are faithful to Dewalt because of how long your 18v lasted, but seriously look into Milwaukee, M12 or M18. HUGE tool lineup.

I voted 20V, but I'll go further and tell you why... firstly, because the two lines are essentially interchangeable. The 12V packs are chargeable in the 20V charger, so it's very easy to add 12V tools to your 20V set. :rocker:

You can get the 12V tools for around $50 a piece as a bare tool on ebay.

I researched everything on the market, and my choice of Dewalt's 20V line came down to one thing: ERGONOMICS. :)

No matter what you say about cost, variety of tools available, parent company, COO, it's undeniable that DeWalt really nailed it with the new 12V and 20V lines, as far as comfort and usability goes.

I used to own both Bosch 18v, and Milwaukee 12V, and the Dewalt 12V and 20V beat them hands down in feel.

The 20V compact drill is the superstar of the whole line IMO, it's got a nice long gripping surface on the chuck and torque adjuster, as well as the new signature handle shape. It's just a really great drill to use.

Additionally, to my best knowledge at the time I write this, the Dewalt 20V compact drill is the only one in its class to hit 2000RPM spindle speed. This is incredibly important if you drill lots of small holes in hard materials, such as drilling rivet holes in aircraft work.

Most of the competitors are in the 1500-1700RPM range when in high gear.

Instead of just spamming 1000x new tools into the market, Dewalt REALLY took their time with the new 20V and 12V lines, and it SHOWS. :) Yes, it is frustrating when I see other brands just crapping out new tools left and right, but I'm happy with my choice every time I pick up my 20V compact drill.

Responding to Kunk- I only will be getting the drill and impact, saws and grinders I prefer to have corded.

I agree, the Dewalt has PERFECT ergos. I thought the M12 felt very chunky in hand and top heavy, not a fan. My only worry is getting chuck wobble, all the reivews I read say its pretty bad.

I've got the DeWalt 20V Max compact drill, drill (not compact), impact driver, brushless impact driver, and circular saw.

Can't say enough good things about the drills. I haven't used the saw yet so I can't speak for it. But by virtue of it being in the same lineup, I expect good things.

It's done everything I've thrown at it. And, I've been working on one charge for weeks now. It's incredible.

Picked up the 20V combo today. Do you have any wobble in the chuck of your drill?

Was tempted to pick up the 12v combo, had an impact, drill, and sawzall for only $179

Got the 20v Hammerdrill/Impact driver combo. Love them both to death! My friend with his dewalt 18v drills has a bit of envy of them as the impact definitely has more punch.

I've been using the non-compact drill (980). Metal chuck. No wobble. Can't remember if the compact (780) had any. The compact has a plastic chuck.
