Noticed today that my local Lowes has discontinued stocking 18 volt stuff. All thats there now is the 20v and 12v stuff...

The 18v and 20v stuff isn't compatible? It's just a marketing ploy... exact same batteries/etc.

Noticed a whole display of DeWalt 18v drill drivers at Lowes last night on special for $89, marked down from $189. Didn't look to see what the status of the other 18v kits was. Still it was a large end cap display at the front of the store, away from the tool section. Didn't exactly look like a 'discontinued clearance' but it was a significant mark down. Now I'm going to have to go back and look.

For DeWalt, the 18V were NiCad and the 20V is Lithium-Ion. The batteries are different form factors. DeWalt does produce Li-Ion batteries in their 18V form factor, but I've never seen those in a home center.

Sounds like they are phasing out the NiCad's Not sure I'd want to run out and buy a soon to be obsolete product. IIRC, the Lithium batteries can not be used in the NiCad equipment, correct? Sounds Like I Might need to think about selling off my old Dewalt stuff now too if that is the case.....

There are literally millions of these tools around the world. The batteries are not going anywhere.

I wouldn't put it past big box stores to drop a line of tools and their accessories for newer lines. I'm sure the batteries will still be found online for quite some time, but the NiCads will disappear within a few years at Home Depot and Lowes. Maybe I'm just looking for an excuse to upgrade. I did buy a Rigid impact/drill combo for their lifetime tool and battery warranty, and I'm fairly impressed. But I quickly figured out how they can stand behind their stuff. Just like the Makita's, they have a thermal overload protector. Which I have tested many times. It does get annoying but it will likely make the tools last forever.

I'd be curious whose idea that was. The 20v line has also been out for atleast two years now so not only do you have other companies biting into the 18v line but now you have the 20v and 12v taking the sales away. They probably just need the real estate for the holidays or for a makeover of the aisle. Thats what my HD did. It seems like they doubled the amount of tools in the aisle by adding higher shelves and dedicated brand "walls".

At one point, Makita did not have thermal protection.
I'm honestly surprised that they 18V line has lasted this long in big box stores. When the switch from 14.4V to 18V occurred, the 14.4 were gone within 2 years.

The drill Lowes has on sale now is the same setup they have offered on Black Fridays for a few years at $99. i have bought four of them so far, basically to get inexpensive extra drills. The batteries supplied with these are the compact series, not the XRP.

The 14.4 was not nearly as widespread. With as much competition and consumer choices as there are in power tools, it would be a bad decision to just assume that the customer would upgrade to 20v. There is a big risk to Dewalt that the customer would switch to another brand.
