Do the 18v nicad and the XRP 18v nicad use the same charger? A buddy gave me a XRP battery that he had laying around unused for a while. I put it on my drill and it turned, but real slow, like a dead battery. I threw it on the charger and tried again after about 10 hrs and is was the same. Trying to find out if the battery is bad or if it just didnt charge.

As mentioned above, almost all 14-18V DeWalt batteries can use the same charger; lithium-ion batteries are the only exception to this rule. The li-ion charger (yellow charger) will charge the ni-cad batteries, but the ni-cad charger (black) will not charge the li-ion batteries.

So to answer your question: yes, the standard and XRP ni-cad batteries work in the same charger.

What is the indicator light on the charger doing? Sometimes it will tell you if there is a fault with the battery based on the way it blinks.

Can you use lithium Ion batteries in Ni-cad tools? sorry to hijack

Yes, obviously if the voltage is the same. Dewalt's tagline is "if it clicks, it works" or something to that effect. Essentially what they mean is they have designed the batteries so that they will only snap into tools they are meant for.

A 14-18 volt dewalt will work. Can you read the date code imprinted on the batt? They last anywhere from 2-5yrs it might be shot.

The only fault to the "yellow charger=LiIon" rule is the (now discontinued) DC022 worklight/dual well charger. I have one, and it is meant for NiCd only. This big charger/worklight seemed to have a very short life. I am willing to think it is because it violated the "yellow" rule as the LiIon batteries were coming out, but I have a feeling it was due to reliability issues. I have a friend with one, and both of ours blew a capacitor inside. It was an easy fix. Someone in China in their infinite wisdom installed a capacitor backwards. It was only a matter of time before the thing blew.
