Re: Home Depot Clearance Thread 2015

that I like... was thinking of getting a broken powertool and using it as the sled but I like this idea better. care to share where you got them for $10 ea
I would buy 5 of them right now.As I write this looking at a pile of old 18v ones I was experimenting with using the Ridgid lifetime battery packs for a hybrid.

I would love to have a Ridgid battery to Dewalt 18v tool adapter. I have a bunch of the old 18v tools, but have started switching to Ridgid due to the lifetime warranty on the batteries.

I'm new to this thread although I've participated in some of the other 18v to 20V Max adapter threads. I'd like to believe that it was all these discussions that caused Dewalt to actually go ahead with this adapter.

But I still wouldn't mind seeing an adapter to the 20V Max Black & Decker/Porter Cable/Craftsman/Stanley Fatmax batteries. It should be easier to build since the shut-off circuitry is in the battery, just like the 18V product line. So no shut-off circuitry needed in the adapter.

Who's going to build it first? :)

i predict this will soon be the end of Dewalts 18v line..

I think that's fine. I haven't bought a 18V Dewalt tool or battery in several years now. The only question for me now is whether I buy the new adapter and go forward with the Dewalt 20V line, or do I build my own adapter to use a B&D/Craftsman 20V Max battery using a $12 18v shell as found on eBay from several vendors. Here's a current link...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Plastic-She...ox-No-Cells-DIY-18V-Ni-MH-Ni-Cd-/321330448725

I also have an old B&D 18V charger (the simple one) that could be an organ donor to build the adapter.

Do I do it? The "drop ship from mfr" scares me, what if they're like several months out or something? Could be Dewalt's way of stirring things up before actual manufacturing starts. IDK?

Well that's a deal killer if it only works with the 1.5/2.0 batteries.

I'm pretty sure it will be at the consumer's discretion to use (or not) the larger batteries. I imagine that in all but the most stressed situations, it will be a non-issue.

What I'm wondering is whether I might be able to use this adapter with Black & Decker 20V Max batteries. I know it won't work as-is; I'd need to eliminate and/or move some of the circuits and make some physical change to the slide-in tracks. But it should be easier (albeit more expensive) than building my own.

Not for me, still more run time than the original 1800mah ni-cds. Plus easier charging and no memory. Not gonna throw 10 or so tools away that still have some life in them. And I'm certainly not gonna spend more money than the adapter for ni-cds to keep the tools running when there is a perfect alternative and I already have 20v batteries and charger. Though I'll probably buy the adapter kit with the 2 packs and charger for hopefully $150.

I bet the bigger mah Li-ion batteries will work but they don't want you heating up the tool motor with all that run time. Or maybe a longer run time heats up the voltage regulator in the adapter???

I like the idea that since I am running Dewalt 20v Lithiums exclusively that I can pick up dirt cheap 18v tools (just about everywhere) and still use them.

The smaller battery capacity can't have anything to do with run time. The manufacturers are not stupid enough to think we don't swap batteries and continue running the tool when a battery dies.

They changed the release date again to January.

Marketing. Still sell new tools for Christmas but keep us tightwads on-board waiting, but not buying another brand to replace our old tools with dead batteries.

I'll wait, I have too many tools and am too impressed by my new 20v batteries that came with my year old drill and driver.

Same here. No way am I going to buy new tools. Did get a heck of a deal on the drill/impact duo and, like you, am happy with the 20v setup.

Dewalt needs to understand that current customers need to be kept happy. If someone jumps to Makita or whatever, they probably are not coming back.

Here's some more info on what tools the adapter won't work with:

The best news I can give since we have no adapter. Lowe's has compact 18v drill kit with charger bag and 2 batts for only 89 bucks. Sold new drill for 20 bag for 5 and charger for 5....I have to many. Couple new batteries for only 60 bucks and some tax. I may go buy a few more kits

It's with the NiCd batteries. Had it been with the LiOn batteries I might have given it a go.

+1...That Max Sled Adapter should have been released last year before more Dewalt 18V diehards defect to another brand. Brushless power tools may be the future but many older 18V Dewalts are still out on the job and could use an updated battery system that introduces them to the newer 20V lineup.

Thanks for the idea made one using that usb adapter. It works but it does not have the full side guide and doesn't have the front indent area so the battery can lock. So if you just use it as is, the battery just slides on and off. So it is a lot of work unless you don't need the battery to lock. I was making one for impact wrench so I wanted it secure and locked.

I added some plastic in the front so it can lock and I have to add something along the sides to help support the battery in the front simulating the guide. The best would be to by another cheap/broken tool and cut off the bottom then you get the full guide/rail and locking.

I think the milwaukee version has a full side guide and locks...but not 100% sure

Will post video of it when I get a chance :rocker:

Does Dewalt have the battery protection circuit in the battery? I thought it was in the tool. Running without one is a good way to toast your battery.

Yep, I agree. I have a bunch of 18v Dewalt and probably would have stuck with them if this had been available. Instead, I have been slowly selling off the 18v stuff and even sold the 20v drill set I picked up when HD had them on clearance for $60.

For the Christmas shopping crowd, I need to post on eBay my 18v recip saw, drill, impact, and grinder. Oh, and 2 XRP batteries with charger. That should be enough to get me another tool in the Ridgid line.

I always use the lights on these batteries so what about just pulling it off when you have one light left, it's not like you can forget about it when you have a that adapter/battery swinging off the bottom...I will let you know if I run it down and have any problems. :D

Is there any danger to discharging the battery besides it will not be able to charge? Will it explode like a lipo?

I tried to wreck a battery ,I bought a new dewalt DCB203 put it in the Impact and ran lag bolts until it died. First ran it down to 1 light out of 3, it will then continue to run when all lights are off but at 1 light there is obvious reduction in power. After I got it to shut off it was very hot. Measured the voltage around 13v. Put it on the charger and it gave a Hot warning flash error.Took it off and I would say it stayed hot for around 45 min. Over that time the voltage comes up enough to run the tool for a couple of seconds so I tried to drain it a couple of times and saw voltage at 5.9v and then left it alone to continue to cool down. Put it back on the charger after it cooled down and it charged back up to 20V.
there is video here but it is pretty boring
