Well I decided it was time to do some garden tool maintenance. I picked up a 4.5 inch 80 grit flapwheel disc for my angle grinder. My intentions were to clean off the rust with it and then change to a metal grinder disc to shapen up the shovel blades. Well to my surprise. These work friggin fantastic. My shovels are very sharp, all the rust is off, they look like new and took no time at all with just the one tool.

Just wanted to share my first experience with a Dewalt product that I purchased. I got 2 shovels done in about 20 minutes.

The shop I worked at used flapwheels only for grinding because the grinding wheel dust would contaminate the welds. Also leaves a nicer finish

Flap wheels are the shiz for pretty much anything besides cutting metal. IME they keep the metal cooler than a grinding disc when taking off a good bit of material, too.

Flap wheels work well for general purpose sharpening like shovels, lawnmower blades, etc. In my experience the Dewalt brand grinder consumables seem to wear out quickly - see if you can find Norton or another brand when this flap wheel wears out.

I hate using grinding wheels. Thankfully the flap discs work way better in return.

Flap discs are nice, Id suggest an even tougher grit like 40 or 60.

+1 on dewalt brand flapdiscs wearing out faster than other brands here. The house brand at Airgas is pretty good. Hunt around online too. Good deals can be had.
