Dewalt at Walmart Online?

Hey There,
Trying to decide if I return a DeWALT Flexvolt Max 7-1/4" 60V Brushless Circular Saw DCS578B that I got delivered from Walmart for $159. This saw is $330-ish at L & HD, and the more I look, the more I begin to wonder if it may be a counterfeit. I have not opened the box, so I really can't examine it for authenticity, and I don't know of any way to check by looking at the box (is there?). I suppose I could open and repackage, but first I figured I'd try to find out (here) if there's a high (or any) percentage chance of this tool actually being a Dewalt.
If the chances are slim, I'd just as soon send it back and pay the difference for a warrantied DW.
Thanks all!

I’d research the seller you purchased from on Walmart.com.
They could be selling overstocks or returns or maybe even products that “fell off the truck” during transport between warehouses.

They have a site, a phone number and a physical location...anything specific I should check...in your opinion?

As with Amazon, the WM site is a venue for many sellers, WalMart isn't necessarily who sold the item.
A call to DeWalt should get you the info to authenticate.
Given WM has their name attached to the sale return shouldn't be an issue. Good luck.

Yeah...can't get a read. I did find them on BBB but everything refers to HVAC services. Not sure if this is a side gig for them??? Is there any way to cipher a real DW saw from the box? I'm not sure I could do it by looking at the tool honestly. I can do a real from a fake Les Paul though:cool:

Post pictures of all sides of the box on here. I’m sure there’s a few specialists here that will notice all the details.

Did you try to call the number listed for them and speak to someone there?

Thanks...I will do that tonight. Haven't called...not sure what I would ask. "Hey, do you guys sell counterfeit tools through Walmart?"

Look the seller up on DeWalt's website under authorized retailers, or search by name, or search for dealers in Miami, FL.... If they're not listed, I'd return it. There are plenty of unauthorized places selling DeWalt, and that doesn't mean it's counterfeit, but I only buy from authorized dealers.

The fact that you got it half price vs what it's currently selling for at Home Depot is highly suspect; I doubt there's a 100% markup at HD for cordless tools- little bags of #10 screws, yes.

I'd still post pictures of the box and if it looks legit open it up and see what it's like. I bought a Dewalt saw several years ago for about 1/2 price online. There was no reason to think it wasn't the real deal and I've never had problems with it.

You're not going to find big differences in price between authorized sellers. But it is on sale right now btw for under $300.

There’s several ways he could acquire stock. For example True Value went out of business last year. Their warehouse inventory was likely wholesaled via brokers at liquidation prices.

Hardware stores fail all the time, and semi trailers slide into the ditch, so insurance companies are left with cargo to liquidate, etc.

Your choice, though. I’d at least open the box.

Thinking of grabbing a reconditioned unit from CPO. Their warranty is 2 years and they're well-respected. It's $179.

That one is brand new. Only 1 left. You better hurry.

And it looks like it's a 3 year warranty.

Oh c'mon! lets see the counterfeit in question, just how good are they getting these days.

Wouldnt you be allowed to open the box and inspect and still get a return?

Pleeeeeeease open the box 🙏

Ohhhhh yeah! Amazing how the QC is all over the map for Gibbys. No issues ever with my Fenders, Ibbys, even the overseas ones. Gibsons...you have to play five to get one...but that one...oh man. I found a 335 that weighed 2/3 of what the majority weight...that thing is beyond amazing! Put Peter Florence PUPs in there...sweeeeeeeet!
Anyway...
Returned the saw to Wally...got on from CPO for 179, and decided to get a router from Toolup...great prices...full warranty...best of both worlds. I would get a cordless screwdriver from Wally...I'll pass on the spinning death tools from them. I'm sure that's overkill, but for the same-ish price...why not get it from an auth dealer?

May not be the case here but be aware that a lot of times things that you buy in Walmart are made to a Walmart standard, like now you can get Alpine car stereos at Walmart but they're not the same internally as they would be from a stereo shop. They may have the same model number but the serial number could be a little bit different. A lot of times it's just little things like brass gears compared to nylon gears but over millions of items that adds up. It's like buying TAG watches at a duty-free store, there different on the inside but look the same on the outside. I found that out years ago when I went to get a battery changed and the Jeweler opened up said you must have bought this at the duty free, he knew right from looking at the movement.

My experience with factory reconditioned is that DeWalt's stuff is virtually new. Milwaukee's looks like it's been through the ringer. Not to say that the Milwaukee doesn't work it just looks used. The DeWalt stuff is hard to tell from the brand new.

I buy all my Bosch reconditioned now. Just like your DeWalt experience they look brand new. They are likely just returns from people that changed their mind. They also put new batteries in, so you know those are new.

CPO stopped selling reconditioned Milwaukee. I don't know if that was their choice or Milwaukee's.

OP ended up getting brand new saw.

Are there any documented fakes of this saw,or any of the newer DeWalt stuff?

There is a TTC? video where they deliberately buy a bunch of counterfeit cordless tools- and the tools are obviously fakes. However, some of the counterfeit batteries are now so cosmetically good that the typical person wouldn't be able to tell. I believe that in one of the PF battery tests he got at least one counterfeit off Ebay, or similar.

There is probably minimal risk in buying a bare tool from an unauthorized seller, but IMO there is a much greater risk with batteries.

I bought some Mitutoyo calipers from Walmart.com (a third party seller) for a really good price. I thought it was legit, since at the time Mitutoyo was having a sale and I thought this was part of it. They turned out to be decent fakes. I found a Youtube video that had tips for determining the real from the fake. I bet there's one for Dewalt tools. I returned them to my local Walmart and stated that they were fake. I bought some from MCMaster-Carr. These were the real deal.

There's a huge difference in copying a tool that hasn't changed in 10, 15, 20yrs - that caliper

VS going through the same effort to copy a power tool that has a new release every 6-18 months, and much more expensive to duplicate.

There's plenty of accusations of duplicates or counterfeits, but reality up to this point is-

They are still visibly and measurably not even close and anyone with some time and the Internet could decipher a difference

We aren't there YET. Counterfeit power tools are still easy to spot

I bought a couple of dewalt 20volt 2 ah batteries at Walmart online a week or so ago. They were only $25.00 each, but they came in a box, but neither of them were in a package. Makes me wonder!
