Related question: I read somewhere here that people got their Dewalt batteries refurbished. How does one go about that? I got at least 2 dead ones...

Yea, and the other way around. I bought a new XRP drill (no batteries) off ebay, because my regualr 18 volt took a dump, but the normal batteries were fine with it.

Called batteries plus, and it is $68 to rebuild the 18 volt DeWalt. I can buy new ones for less.

Ouch! :yikes:

I checked for a store around here and they have several. I was going to call them (might call them anyway, just to see if I get the same ridiculous price). I saw $30 mentioned in another forum when googling them a bit...

There are other battery refurbishment places that aren't nationwide, my wife got a pair of my Dewalts redone for about $40 each. I'd like to know where you can get them for $68 Junk, around here they're about $90 a piece and that's Lowe's or Home Depot.

The case on the Batteries plus product is cheap also and the release mechanisms fall apart pretty easily.

I find them on ebay all the time for a good price. You have to be patient, to catch a good price, but they are there...

I had mine done by voltmanbatteries on ebay. He charges $45 per battery now for regular 18v Dewalt. I had it done in Feb for $40 per battery If I remember right. I have used them moderately and they work fine.

Okay I'll try not to ramble.

The batteries in question are made from a series of smaller batteries all connected together. I would imagine they use 2600mAh subC cells. Now my favorite supplier for batteries is TNRBATTERIES.com, after a quick search it looks like you can aquire this type of battery for between 3-5 bucks each. you probably need between 6 and 8 depending on how much voltage you have. I would pry the battery pack apart and check first. This will provide you with the quantity and the ratings of the batteries you need (the rating will be on the individual cells.) Replacing the batteries will require soldering but if anyone needs help just contact me and i can give you detailed soldering instructions.

Hint - Nickle Metal batteries become damaged by heat, so use a heat sink when soldering. Also make sure your iron is really hot so you minimize contact time with the work. Finally i would use Silver bearing solder (62/36/2) because it has a higher tinsel strength than 60/40 rosin core.
