Not sure what’s going on here, but I went to put a battery in a tool, and it was dead.

then I noticed the charging light was not on the base of the charger ….. and yes, I did put it on another outlet overnight that I know for sure works, and- nothing.

How would I check and see if it’s the battery or the charger?

Should I replace both around the same time? I would guess they are around 5 years old.

TIA

Battery you can probe the two big main terminals with a volt meter to see if there's anything there. Charger you pretty much need to try a different battery. Odds are it's the battery though, might need a jump start.

I would use process of elimination. First test the voltage across these two terminals on the battery and make sure you have something close to the battery's nominal voltage (17 - 21 volts). If it's much less than that, the charger may be affraid to charge it.
