First, I'd just like to say that I love this site, spent hours lurking and reading and learning!

I'm considering a small-ish compressor for home use. The main reason for use, and the most use it would get, would be help on auto repair. So, intermittent impact use along with use of an air ratchet (not continual use, obviously). I'd love to have a giant 60/80 gallon oil unit built in, but right now, that's not in the plans until I purchase a house. I liked the idea of the 200psi DeWalt units, so that I have a bit of time before it dropped below 90psi (read: slightly more time than a 125psi unit :) ). The portability of the 4.5 gallon unit is very appealing to me, but I'm sure that tank would drain in an amusingly small amount of time. So I'm mainly looking at the 15 gallon unit. I've heard the DeWalts getting lots of flack and bad rep here on this forum, but almost everywhere else, they get very good reviews. I know they are "oil less" and will be noisy, but the DeWalts I've heard run are slightly quieter, so that helps a small bit.

Does anyone here actually have the DeWalt 15 gallon or even the 4.5 gallon that would like to chime in?

I also liked the 8 and 15 gallon CH compressors at Lowes, but I'd like to use my HD gift cards if possible. Any opinions on those CH units would also be appreciated.

For reference, I'm looking at getting the IR Impact/Ratchet kit, with the Impact pulling an average of 5.0cfm and the ratchet 3 cfm if I recall. I also looked a some "husky" kit that included more at HD, and claimed ~4cfm for all the tools, but to be honest I like the IR tools better.

I will state that I understand some of my choices/options are not people's first, second, or even third choice, but they are within my budget and I understand they won't be the best and I'll have to sacrifice some. I also know that at times, some times frequently, I'll be waiting on the compressor to fill. I am ok with this. I've only had experience with cheap compressors that take forever, but waiting for a slow compressor is not as bad as having no air tools to help, at least for me.

Thanks in advance for any help, and patience with a newbie post. I know they can be frustrating :D

The contractor that's building our new home/shop has a 15 gal unit and he loves it. Granted its mostly used for nail guns but when it does cut in, I did notice that while louder than an oiled unit, it is quieter than most oil less units Ive encountered. The 15 gal tank will limit you but if you're only using an impact gun or air ratchet intermittently you shouldn't have too many issues.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

I bought mine on Ebay about $270, really like it no problems so far. There's one on Ebay for 250 shipped. I've run air drills, smaller die grinder, 1/2 impacts, finish nailers with it. I've the 4.5 unit.

I have the 4.5 gallon for my portable compressor and I have worked it hard and put away wet and it keeps going. I've had it for about 6-7 years now and it's been a great compressor. I've used it for running multiple nail guns at the same time roofing and framing. Also used it for HVLP spraying one time when it ran almost none stop and it didn't miss a beat.

Thanks for the replys so far. I should also mention I randomly stopped into Home Depot and the 33 gallon husky that I've seen recommended here that's usually 349 is on clearance for 279. After 20% harbour frieght coupon and 70$ in gift cards thats also mighty tempting.
