I have a 18 volt drill.my daughters muscle bound boyfriend smoked my drill I guess.He returned it and I put it away. Yesterday I pulled it out and as soon as I pulled the trigger a small amount of smoke comes out of motor area and smells. It works tho...Are the brushes bad? Seams to spark a lot near amrature.fixable or **** can?? Thanks. Jim

I pulled and cleaned the brushes on mine in November. They were chipped and generally nasty. There's a lot of grease around there, could just have been used at an angle you haven't before and got goobered.
I found another 18v Dewalt, tool only, on eBay for about $30, and it showed up before I fixed the first. Good excuse to buy a new tool and see what the old guts look like.

The smell is ozone from the brushes and commutator excessive arcing/sparking. If you can service the motor I would take the brushes out, inspect the copper segments on the commutator for burnt spots, clean the commutator (lightly grind with a comm. stone if needed), and install new brushes or just clean up the old brushes if there is enough length to work with.
I personally haven't fixed the DeWalt drill motors, but I have replaced a few drill motors at work that industrial maintenance guys abused in the steel foundry.

Also, I intend to get both my girls small drills when they're (8? 10?) and something like a 14 or 18v drill driver when they move out. My 4 year old drilled and hammered dowels on the bunk bed she sleeps in, hoping to have them able to repair their own cheap furniture and basic plumbing before they go.
I just went through my old 18XRP and it still did the same minus smoke. better, but still acted funky, After a few phone calls and I had a new trigger and it runs like new again. So well, in fact, I put a new nose assembly on it and bought a couple of China batteries($55) to try to get a few more years of life out of it.I'm not usually a Dewalt guy but this thing has been amazing(2005 model). Third brush replacement and first trigger-nose replacement.You can't imagine the work it has done.

I already made the clubs on the lathe.
I have 3 dewalt drills. One of them is over 15 years old. One of the newer ones is letting the smoke out, and way down on power. I haven't tried replacing anything yet. Has anyone fixed one by cleaning and replacing the brushes? Its odd because the one that smokes has the least amount of hours on it.

How hard is it to change brushes?
