To start with I'm committed to the 20v platform. I already have the big boy DCF899 1/2 impact. Great tool but HEAVY. I already have the DCF883 but can't help wondering if the DCF890 would be an worthy improvement. I can not find any direct comparisons between the 2.

DCF883 brushed, 130 ft lbs ????

DCF890 brushless, a little more RPM and IPM; and a hair bit lighter, 150 ft lbs

I don't think you'll feel much of an improvement going to the DCF890 if you already have the DCF883. The two are almost identical in power output. The 890 is just the newer brushless version that should give a bit more battery life and tool life.

If I was buying from scratch I'd probably go with the 890, but already owning the 883 it seems unnecessary to get the 890 as well. Also assuming you use the 899 for heavy work, and the 883 for smaller work, I don't think you'd ever notice the extra ~20 ft lbs.

Besides 20ft/lbs it also has almost 500 more impacts per minute and a higher free load speed. If it were me I would buy the bare tool for $100 and keep the dcf883 for a backup or sell it to make up some of the price of the new dcf890. Just my opinion.

I have a new IDEA I just pickup a shiny new DCF887 impact driver as part of set. I already have one. looking at the specs it has the same amount of torque, impacts per sec, same RPM as the DCF890 in 3rd gear. So I may try to replace the anvil with a 3/8" one.

If it works I'll have a brushless impact on the cheap.

Looks like it would work. I did something similar with a spare impact driver I had:

It looks like Amazon has the best price for the anvil you'll need.

I did the same as it's much easier to find a deal on the impact driver and convert than just the 3/8" impact. I have less than half of what the impact costs in my converted driver.
