DeWalt DCV580H vac mod....

Here's how I modified my DeWalt DCV580H 20V cordless vacuum:

First I taper down a dowel so the wide mouth nozzle attachment fit snugly on it....


Then make a cut mark on it about an inch below....


Take it to the tablesaw....


Mark the center to drill a screw hole....


And mount it to a scrap piece of plywood....


Then mount the attachment and closely slice off the ribs on both outside edges....


Then clean up the edges and round the sharp corners....

Next, re-color the edges with Fiebing's black leather dye....



I ordered from Amazon, 5 plastic battery cover/mounting holders for DeWalt batteries (you have to drill out the screw holes with a 7/32" bit)....

Went to Lowe's and picked up some #10-24 x 3/4" flat head machine screws with nuts and lock washers (could have gotten by with 1/2")....


These holders come with raised ribs down both sides but for my application I need to remove the ribs on one side....



I had to remove one side of the ribs to allow for a close fit next to where the wide mouth attachment goes so I could mount them to the vac body and still have access to the tool....

Now, I can carry two spare batteries (any size) with the vac so, lets say I was vacuuming out my truck at the end of the drive and my battery dies...I wouldn't have to stop and go back the shop and get a fresh battery!!!....





Next, I need to figure out how to mount one, possibly two vac wand attachments....


I'll be on the lookout for some sort of clips the fasten the wands to the top.....or maybe even down each side below the latches.....Hmmmmmmm



I have three remaining holders that I can use as battery covers for when I carry batteries in a tool bag to keep them from shorting out....

Very clever.
If you had access to a 3d printer, you could have printed those battery holders- there are lots of free designs available.
Look for broom handle clips to mount your tubing. I bought a bunch to act as gun holders in my safe- lots of different designs out there that should open wide enough for those tubes.

After looking for some type of clips to use to hold the 2 wands to the vac....


....I decided to use some Neodymium button magnets.


I scored the backs of the magnets to give them some holding power in the epoxy.


I also scored the vac where the magnets will go.



I epoxied them to the 4 corners of the handle





I then took 4 small short sheet metal screws....

....And cut off the tips (so they wouldn't protrude into the wand and catch everything being vacuumed)


I screwed them into the wands at the same spacing as the magnets on the handle....


....And, presto! they're mounted to the vac so they can be used as needed!




If they should not hold as good as I'd like, then I'll just bungie them to the handle

very practical mods! Should the magnets not suffice, I was going to suggest the black plastic clips they sell to hold a large Maglite flashlight, depending on the diameter of the tube.

Well......the magnets are gone I picked up the vac the other day and slightly bumped the vac into my leg and the wand when flying so that's no bueno

thr3squared suggested using mag light clips (great ideal) which would work but I was afraid of them breaking because they are hard plastic (plus they're more expensive)
So, I found and purchased the 4pc. rubber flashlight set (wasn't sure they would be large enough but took a gamble at $8.00)

I'm going to mount them on the sides of the lower tub


I measured and marked for the holes....


....And drilled a 11/64" hole X4


And they are nice and snug....Ideally I should have bought two sets and used the 4 biggest ones (still might go that route) cause the small ones are pretty tight but, we'll see

What can I add to this vac next?......maybe a 20V solar powered battery charger????? Hmmmmmmmmm
