About a year ago I got a set of DeWalt drill bits after project farm rated them the best, and they were on sale at HD

When I was working on my trailer, the hardly used 5/16 bit just snapped right in two when I was drilling through some metal. It was in reverse and I was getting it out of the metal/wood it had gone through, and just snapped

I emailed them, they wanted me to take the bit back to HD for a replacement. HD Showed out of stock on the website and I didn't want to go all the way down there so I let them know HD was out of stock

Just got THREE bits back in the mail. Pretty good warranty I think

Figured I'd post, I always like buying from companies with good warranty and DeWalt seems to have stood by its product here

Don't run drills in reverse. It dulls them.

Very much a consumable. I usually buy the common sizes I use in packs of 5 or 10.

I had them replace one SDS bit years ago, used in one of their sds drills, snapped first use first hole without binding up or anything...same deal, they just mailed a replacement and it was fine since.

Sometimes drill bits just are bad right out of the box, if they fail first day in normal use then warranty is nice. Otherwise, I am definitely of the opinion they are consumables, I don't expect warranty if I'm misusing or rough on them.

I too assume they are consumable, but I don't recall using this bit much at all, so it snapping seems like a defect to me

I figured sending an email doesn't cost me anything, so its worth a shot. Paid off!

I'm going to start doing that with more tools, why reach into my pocket if the company wants to make it right.

Win-Win for everyone I think. I get 3 new bits, they paid whatever cost it was for the bits (Almost nothing, I'm sure) and now I trust DeWalt more

You made out! If I had been in charge you might have received a replcement and a paper telling you how to drill holes properly.

In that case, I would switch to a different brand of bit

I've gotten snark from companies before on warranty claims, I just stop buying their stuff

Good deal. I always thought that drill bits were considered consumables.

How long ago did you purchase the set?
My thoughts exactly and it's a terrible recipe for company prosperity.
If you warranty a 5/16, youll warranty a 1/2" and if you warranty that you'll do a 1/16"

Thats the problem. Those little bits that can break just from normal use ...

Good for the OP but that whole set is about $20

Funnily enough, the small its in this set are excellent! I had a Ryobi Titanium set and the smaller bits will snap like toothpicks. These are pretty good

Generally been pretty happy with these DeWalt bits, there must have been something wrong with it for it to just snap like that under no load

Costed just $9 for the set on sale too

Probably happened because of your wording in the email. Consumables are usually still warrantied if it's defective so as long as that's made clear there'd be no issue assuming the rep isn't looking for a fight.

Plus you might buy other sizes from them since you had a good experience. A proper warranty is just marketing in the end, give good service and maybe they'll buy more stuff.
