I thought maybe it needed new brushes! The armature is toast. Wondering if I can get away with using the same field?

Doubtful, that looks pretty catastrophic and probably damaged everything.

Where would you get just an armature anyway?

Ebay, some seller online. Unfortunately its the Type 1 so parts harder to find.

I have the same Dewalt planer, and mine is broken too. The motor runs but the knives don't turn. I haven't tried to take it apart to see what is wrong yet.

(Not an offer to part it out, I really want to repair it, but I am working out of town for the next couple of months.)

Belt is broken, common problem. Belts are fairly inexpensive, but a ***** to put on. Look into the milk jug solution for this, works very well.

That's ridiculous as all heck. I think DeWalt should send you a new one. I don't care if it's out of warranty or not.

Because armatures aren't supposed to catastrophically blow apart like that. They either get an open winding, or the commutator wears out.

Regardless, if it's outside the warranty period, then it's time for the OP to buy a new motor. Or maybe a new planer. Granted, he could send a picture to DeWalt and see what they say, never hurts to try, but the warranty is the warranty.

Update: nearest service center in 700 miles away. Closest repair place is 28 miles but they will bill you once they start repairs, so expensive regardless. I'll just hold on to it and look for parts in the future.
