The impact driver is excellent. The drill is one of their compact ones; not as heavy duty as their dcd950 drill. The batteries are their compact lithium ion; they have half as many cells inside as the XRP 18V lithium ion but they are the same cells (Lithium iron phosphate 123 cells) which are probably the best technology commercially available for long-lasting cells.

You won't be going wrong with that impact driver; I think it's the same as the dc827 that comes with the heavy duty sets. The batteries are very good ones if you are willing to accept the half-as-long run time compared to the xrp lithium. You can always buy into the longer run-time xrp batteries later. The drill is fine if you're not looking for heavy duty; its compactness is a plus. The DCD950, which would be included on Dewalt's heavier duty kits, is much more compact than its predecessors, is heavy duty, and comes with a rohm chuck. I'd compare prices at Amazon and Toolking.

I brought the ni-cad combo when they went on sale after the lith-ion ones came out. All I can say is it is the best money i ever spent. The drill and impact are both tough as nails and will keep running all day. I have built 5-6 decks over the summer using the set, and I must say I will never build a deck again without an impact. I also have expanded my dewalt 18 volt setup with a reciprocating saw, 1/2" impact, and cordless vacuum.

If there a difference in a impact driver and impact gun... I was thinking of getting this combo for fabrication and the impact to take off lug nuts and etc.
